Ever since its launch in 2003, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has remained one of the most popular Star Wars video games of all time. Due to its popularity, it's strange that fans haven't seen a single player Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game since KOTOR's sequel The Sith Lords, but that may be changing at some point in the near future. Industry insider Jason Schreier has confirmed that a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is in development.

Schreier confirmed that a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is in development in a discussion with MinnMax's Ben Hanson. The full scope of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake was not revealed by Schreier, but he did reveal that the studio making the game is apparently Aspyr Media. This may very well clue KOTOR fans in on what they should expect from the remake.

For the uninitiated, Aspyr is a studio primarily known for porting and remastering older games for modern platforms. In 2021 alone, Aspyr has worked on Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse as well as Star Wars: Republic Commando. In fact, Aspyr has had a hand in bringing a variety of older Star Wars games to modern platforms, and it was also responsible for the KOTOR mobile ports.

Since Aspyr made the Knights of the Old Republic mobile ports, it makes sense that the studio is the one handling the remake. However, it remains to be seen if this remake will be a full-blown remake with completely redone graphics and things of that nature, or if it will be more of an enhanced port. Whatever the case may be, Star Wars Day is right around the corner, so if fans are lucky, maybe they will get some more specific details sooner rather than later.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has actually had a fairly limited release when it comes to traditional gaming platforms. Its initial launch saw it released for PC and the original Xbox, though it was eventually ported to Mac, Android, and iOS. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has never been available on PlayStation or Nintendo platforms, so the remake would represent a unique opportunity to greatly expand the game's audience.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is still talked about to this day, and for good reason. The game spawned popular characters like Darth Revan and helped lay the groundwork for future BioWare titles, like the studio's Mass Effect series. A remake or even a remaster will likely go appreciated by fans, though those who can't wait should know that it is possible to play the game on at least one modern platform. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is currently playable on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X through the backward compatibility program.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is available for Android, iOS, PC, and Xbox.
