The day that fans have been waiting for is finally here, as the long-awaited Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake has officially been announced. The game has been rumored for quite some time, originally being confirmed by way of Jason Schreier, but there's been no official confirmation of its existence until now. However, the trailer didn't reveal many details about what to expect.

Commencing after PlayStation's Jim Ryan gave a short speech, the confirmation was a huge reveal to help kick off the show. While the teaser trailer was brief, clocking in at just over a minute, it did offer the silhouette of Darth Revan as a character, seemingly Bastilla, soliloquizes about the Sith. The trailer then shows Revan igniting his lightsaber, illuminating him and giving a look at his mask. The trailer flashes the remake’s logo before stating “a legend remade for PS5.”

Knights of the Old Republic is considered by many to be one of the best Star Wars games ever made. Developed by BioWare in the early 2000s, it offered a structure similar to Mass Effect – which it also helped inspire – allowing players to explore the galaxy and make decisions that would change the game’s ending. In the time since, it's become something of a classic, a frame of reference for when fans ask about a Star Wars RPG. There was an attempt to follow in its footsteps with Star Wars: The Old Republic, an MMO, but it never reached quite the same level of acclaim.

Unfortunately, the teaser trailer is sparse on details. Revan is clearly CGI, so it doesn’t clarify how good the game will look with updated visuals, and there was no release window revealed in the trailer, which does indicate the game is likely a ways off. However, fans can at least be thankful that the game is now confirmed.

Interestingly, this isn't the only high-profile EA game with a remake currently in the works. Dead Space is also getting a remake, which, if the two are of similar scope, might indicate how Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake will take shape. It's still too early to speculate, and with too little to be sure, but fans are finally getting their wish granted.
