Fans have been waiting for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 for years, but the game has never materialized. However, that doesn't mean it wasn't in some kind of production at different points in time, and in fact, Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order writer Chris Avellone has revealed what the story was going to be for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 had Obsidian been given the chance to develop it.

After Obsidian wrapped development on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 - The Sith Lords, it started working on a story pitch for Knights of the Old Republic 3. According to Avellone, KOTOR 3 would have been about players encountering ancient Sith lords in specific parts of the galaxy that they control. The game would have seen players visit planets and moons under these ancient Siths' control, where they would get a chance to see how their evil influence had wreaked havoc. Throughout the course of the game, Knights of the Old Republic 3 players would have learned more about these ancient Sith lords.

Unfortunately, Obsidian never had the chance to create Knights of the Old Republic 3 and finish the trilogy. Avellone believes that Obsidian was initially passed on to make KOTOR 3 because a team at LucasArts wanted to do handle it internally, but that never came to pass. Avellone also thinks BioWare attempted to make KOTOR 3 multiple times, but unfortunately the game never got off the ground there either.

knights of the old republic 3 story revealed

Avellone is right about BioWare attempting to make Knights of the Old Republic 3 over the years. In fact, reports have indicated that BioWare is still interested in working on Knights of the Old Republic 3, but EA won't let BioWare make KOTOR 3 for whatever reason. It's also been said that BioWare Austin had been teased with working on KOTOR 3, but was never really given the chance to do so.

It's unclear why EA seems so hesitant to let BioWare work on Knights of the Old Republic 3. But if KOTOR 3 does eventually come to fruition, it will be interesting to see if it retains any of the ideas originally pitched by Obsidian back in the day.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 is not in active development.
