The upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has a sizable amount of hype and anticipation surrounding it, with the success of the first title in Respawn's now-franchise placing huge expectation on its upcoming sequel. While fans have only been treated with small promotional glimpses of the settings and characters thus far, discourse and theorizing about what Jedi: Survivor may entail are still very much in play around various online circles.

Like with the first game, one of the most exciting elements about Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the avenues it opens up for callbacks and references to other pieces of Star Wars media given the time period in which it's set. With this in mind, Survivor might offer the perfect opportunity for a flashback sequence involving Grogu from The Mandalorian, who is one of the most popular contemporary characters in the franchise.

While seemingly being worlds apart from one another, both Cal Kestis and Grogu share similar backgrounds. Both characters were taken into the Jedi Order at a young age, and trained as Jedi Padawans at around the same time. One of the defining moments for both characters concerns their shared experience of Order 66 being executed, a devastating move that led to widespread death and all-but completely wiped out the Jedi Order.

Both characters were then left with shattered lives, living as alienated outcasts who were constantly on the run from the Empire and its Inquisitors - solely tasked with eliminating any Jedi that may have survived Order 66. Given the similarities between their stories, and the sheer popularity of Grogu due to the success of The Mandalorian on Disney+, a flashback scene for the beloved character would be a great piece of fan service while serving a genuine narrative purpose.

While it is known that both Cal and Grogu were not together as Order 66 occurred, it is plausible that the two could have trained alongside each other in some capacity during their younger Padawan years. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order set a precedent for engaging, purposeful flashbacks, famously conveying Cal's memories of the traumatic Order 66 and his narrow escape from death.

With this in mind, the upcoming Survivor will likely also employ this storytelling technique, again exploring Cal's childhood memories as they relate to some theme in the overall game. These flashbacks could include Cal's time in training, and a nod to Grogu training alongside the game's protagonist would surely be exciting for a great many fans. Despite being an adored character, Grogu's short tenure on screen means he remains one of the most mysterious additions to the universe. Yet, he's also an integral character for modern TV narratives in the Star Wars franchise, only further reinforcing the benefit of adding to his lore and establishing his presence across different mediums.

It may be unlikely that Grogu appears within any present-day events throughout Jedi: Survivor due to the sensitivity of The Mandalorian's ongoing timeline, but a flashback appearance would be a perfect way to make reference. Given the overt similarities between Cal and Grogu, combining with the contemporary popularity of both characters, it is clear to see why a Grogu appearance would fit in the upcoming title.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releases on March 17, 2023, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
