Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is one of the most anticipated games of early 2023, where players will return to Cal Kestis' adventure five years after the first game. Cal must do whatever it takes to survive, unleashing new Force Powers and making choices questionable of a Jedi as seen in its couple of trailers. That, too, translates to gameplay.

Game director Stig Asmussen recently spoke with Game Informer regarding Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's Lightsaber combat. This is something the first game nailed but also something Respawn is improving in the second. During this conversation, Asmussen detailed the five lightsaber stances Cal will use throughout the game and confirms that Cal will have a Blaster in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. This had leaked online via a toy Cal Kestis with a blaster a couple of months ago, so it's nice to have official confirmation.

In regard to how these lightsaber stances are used, certain ones are more beneficial against certain enemies. In Asmussen's own words, "it’s advantageous to use certain types of stances against certain types of enemies, and it’s up to the player to figure that out." Two of the battle stances are presumably the single-blade lightsaber and dual-bladed lightsaber, but Asmussen confirms and discusses three of these lightsaber stances in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor - the dual-blade option (two single-blade lightsabers), the Crossguard lightsaber (a la Kylo Ren), and the saber + blaster combo. The first is seemingly a high dexterity stance that sees Kylo flipping and spinning his two blades separately.

Meanwhile, the Crossguard lightsaber stance is described as more confident, weighty, and beefy, with timing windows being longer with the blade, so players have to measure out its use. The exact gameplay of the blaster and saber combo isn't discussed, outside the obvious addition of a new ranged element, but according to Asmussen, it's reflective of Cal's current place in the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor story. "He’s an unconventional Jedi, and he has to do unconventional things. So, something that would be frowned upon during the height of the Jedi Order? Cal’s finding he’s going to do whatever it takes,” says Asmussen.

With a little less than three months to go from launch as of this writing, fans can reasonably expect to see more of this in action. There are plenty of questions left regarding the story of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor like where is Merrin, its gameplay on top of that, its new characters, and more. Respawn will no doubt save some secrets for launch, but it's an exciting time for fans nonetheless.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releases on March 17, 2023, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
