Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will not give players the option to choose between the light and dark sides of the Force, according to developer Respawn Entertainment. Although some Star Wars games in the past have allowed players to choose their own path with their own respective Force powers, that will not be the case with the upcoming single-player story-driven game.

The information came during the gameplay reveal of the game at EA Play at E3 2019 when host Greg Miller asked why a choice between light and dark side would not be present in the game. Game director Stig Asmussen explained that the choice does not exist in the game because the main character Cal has a set story and character arc in the game: "Cal is authentic, and he has to fill a certain role so he can be used in other places." Respawn CEO Vince Zampella chimed in to say, "This is a Jedi story."

During the conversation, the developers from Respawn discussed how Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is focused on story and that the events of the game will be canon within the Star Wars universe. And therein lies the difference between some of the other games that have come before it that did give players more agency as to how they aligned themselves with the Force. But, as Respawn has reiterated while talking about the game since its reveal, Jedi: Fallen Order is focused on delivering that single-player narrative game. It sounds like the game will send players on a predetermined narrative path similar to other single-player games such as The Last of Us or God of War.

In the same way, there will not be a variance of light and dark side Force abilities with the developer revealing that there are four main Force abilities that can be upgraded throughout the game: Force push, pull, slow, and jump.
