If recent rumors are to be believed, the next saga in Star Wars will take place in a previously unexplored time period known as the High Republic. Rumored to be called "Project Luminous," this next saga will be a transmedia presentation of big-screen films, books, comic books, and may even possibly kick off with a Star Wars video game set in the High Republic Era. While many video game fans are probably very familiar with the Old Republic time period of Star Wars thanks to the Knights of the Old Republic RPGs and The Old Republic MMORPG, the High Republic is uncharted territory.

Previous to these rumors of a High Republic Era, Star Wars had previously been mostly divided by the Old Republic Era thousands of years prior to the events of the original trilogy of films, then the Republic Era which was witnessed in the prequels, and the era of the Galactic Empire in the original trilogy. But it would make sense that in those hundreds or thousands of years that make up the Republic Era, there would be a lot happening and sub-eras within it.

According to the rumors, which have been reported by sources that have been accurate in the past such as Making Star Wars, the High Republic Era will take place 400-500 years prior to the events of the sequel. By the name alone, it is clear that this period of time will showcase the Republic at the height of its prominence and power. Many fans may have thought the Republic was at its preeminent power as seen in the prequels, but this was very much the downward fall of the Republic just before Palpatine took over as emperor and formed the Empire.

That also means that the Jedi are likely to be at one of their most active times in the history of Star Wars. In fact, in the recent comic book The Rise of Kylo Ren #2, the very first mention of this High Republic era appeared (which in itself may lend some credibility to these rumors), with Lor San Tekka (the character who hands off the map to Luke Skywalker's location in the opening scene of The Force Awakens) that the High Republic Era was a time of greatly expanded Jedi activity throughout the galaxy.

And perhaps the most famous Jedi, Yoda, has also been mentioned in the rumors, as possibly appearing in this new saga as a much younger Jedi than the Yoda in the films. It is unknown just how he will appear (if he does in fact appear), considering The Mandalorian TV series has revealed that Yoda's species ages much differently, with a 50-year-old member of the species appearing like a toddler. Yoda was 900 years old when he died in Return of the Jedi, so he would be around 300-400 years old in the High Republic Era.

As for the enemy of the Jedi, the Sith were likely very much in hiding in this part of history, but that does not mean they will not appear even as the main antagonist force. The Sith's famous "Rule of Two" had been established hundreds of years prior to this time period, so there likely will not be hundreds of Sith and Sith armies like those seen in the Old Republic Era. So, any Sith in this time period would likely appear in the familiar master and apprentice structure.

Not much more is known, but it is certainly exciting for Star Wars fans to think of all the possibilities and stories that games, movies, and more could explore and tell in this almost completely unknown time in Star Wars. Not even the old Expanded Universe (known as "Legends" after Disney purchased Lucasfilm) has ever told stories in this era, so it is filled with opportunities for new characters and stories.
