Still one of the biggest entertainment franchises on the planet, Star Wars enters its 46th year of being in 2023, and it has quite the year ahead of itself. A new series of the Clone Wars spinoff Bad Batch is just about to debut, The Mandalorian Season 3 is around the corner, and a slew of other projects are on the horizon. But on top of the upcoming series, Star Wars also has plenty of video games in the pipeline, with 2023 set to be home to at least two of them.

Despite being one of the biggest publishers in the industry, EA's Star Wars output has been fairly lackluster over the last 7 years or so, with just a handful of AAA Star Wars titles releasing under EA's banner. But now EA has lost its exclusivity rights, things are finally picking up for the world of Star Wars video games, with a ton of projects currently in development, from the highly-anticipated sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order to the mysterious Star Wars: Eclipse.

Everything Revealed About Star Wars Jedi: Survivor So Far

The long-awaited sequel to 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is set to release March 17, 2023. Taking place five years after the events of Fallen Order, Jedi: Survivor sees an older and wiser Cal Kestis as he continues to try and push back the ever-growing threat of the Empire, though the odds are more against him than ever. Aside from that rough outline, not a lot is known about Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's plot, only that Cal will team up with new character Bode, and that his new journey will once again take him across the galaxy.

A little more has been revealed about Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's gameplay, however, with a recent Game Awards trailer showcasing a plethora of new combat and parkour mechanics. According to the trailer, players will have access to at least some new lightsaber stances, including a heavy crossguard stance. Cal will also wield a blaster during the game, though it hasn't been shown in action in a trailer yet.

Presumably, Cal will also be able to harness a few new Force powers over the course of the game, though none have really been shown so far. Parkour-wise, players will now have access to an ascension cable, which will act as a grappling hook that the player can use to climb structures. Fans will probably find out a little more about Star Wars Jedi: Survivor in the coming months, though Respawn Entertainment could choose to maintain secrecy over the game's plot and hidden mechanics.

Star Wars: Hunters is Finally Set to Release in 2023

Star Wars Hunters Characters

Announced all the way back in February 2021, Star Wars: Hunters is finally set to release in 2023, after five long years of development. Releasing for the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices, Star Wars: Hunters will be a free-to-play multiplayer character shooter in a similar vein to the likes of Overwatch 2 and Team Fortress 2. Set between the events of Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens, Star Wars: Hunters will drop players into various arenas themed around iconic Star Wars locales.

Each player will choose a character from a seemingly diverse roster, packed with ex-stormtroopers, Sith acolytes, and bounty hunters. Despite being in development since 2018, not a lot has been revealed about Star Wars: Hunters' gameplay, though fans are sure to find out more in the next few months.

Fans Could See More From Respawn's Star Wars FPS and Strategy Game

While Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Star Wars: Hunters are the only games currently slated for a 2023 release, that doesn't mean fans won't see more from the rest of Lucasfilm Games' upcoming slate. On top of Jedi: Survivor, Respawn Entertainment is also currently working on two more Star Wars titles, a first-person shooter and a strategy game.

Not much is known about either of these titles, only that the FPS is being helmed by industry veteran Peter Hirschmann, and that the strategy game is being primarily developed by Bit Reactor, a new studio formed by old Firaxis devs who have previously worked on XCOM and Civilization. Currently, there's no information on when these games will be set, or who they'll be focused around.

Star Wars: Eclipse and Knights of the Old Republic Could Rear Their Heads Again

2022 was a bit of an odd year for Star Wars announcements. While Respawn announced a handful of new games, it was done so in a short blog post on EA and Lucasfilm Games' website, and both Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake and Star Wars: Eclipse suffered some significant setbacks. At the start of the year, a number of reports released, claiming that Star Wars: Eclipse could still be over five years away and that the announcement trailer was only revealed so early as a means to hype up the recruitment process.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic had an even worse time, getting delayed indefinitely halfway through the year, and Aspyr having seemingly lost the lead development position on the project. Though it seems highly unlikely that fans will get to see either of these Star Wars games anytime soon, there's always a slight chance that a new trailer could drop toward the end of the year.

Other Star Wars Projects That Are on the Horizon

If all that wasn't enough for fans, they're in luck, as two more Star Wars games are currently on the horizon. The first of these is Ubisoft's open-world Star Wars game. Announced back in 2021, Ubisoft Massive is currently hard at work on an open-world Star Wars adventure that's set to make use of the powerful Snowdrop engine. With the announcement coming almost two whole years ago, it seems likely that fans will get to see at least a trailer for Ubisoft's Star Wars game by the end of the year.

Back in April 2022, another new Star Wars project was announced. Being developed by Skydance New Media and helmed by industry legend Amy Hennig, this Star Wars title is set to be a narrative-driven action-adventure game, which ties in neatly with Hennig's previous work on titles like Uncharted, Legacy of Kain, and Jak and Daxter. Infamously, Hennig had worked on a Star Wars game codenamed "Project Ragtag" quite a few years ago, which was canceled unceremoniously by EA. It's a safe bet to assume that Skydance's Star Wars game is still quite a ways out, and fans probably won't see anything from it in 2023, though it's not impossible.
