Star Wars has a long history of video games in a variety of genres. The full library of Star Wars video games includes adaptations of the films, shooters, racing games, fighting games, mobile games, MMOs, edutainment, RPGs, real-time strategy, flight simulators, and hack-and-slash. Jedi Fallen Order can now add "Soulslike" and "Metroidvania" to the list, and there is an upcoming open-world game called Eclipse. Very few genres remain untouched by the franchise. However, while the Star Wars brand can be found in nearly every genre of video games, that does not mean there is still material they have not touched.

The Star Wars franchise has introduced fans to a lot of exciting characters, many of whom have become well-loved. While there have been occasional missteps, every Star Wars fan has their favorite characters. The appearance of popular characters is sometimes used as a selling point for Star Wars games. But there are some really great characters who would lend themselves to some very interesting video games. Many of them have been able to carry movies or TV shows with great success, and could almost certainly star in a video game.

Updated March 6, 2023 by John Alexander Hitchcock: With Star Wars gaining more attention due to the release of The Mandalorian season 3, The Bad Batch, and the upcoming Jedi Fallen Order: Survivor, it seemed a good time to revisit this topic with new entries.

9 Ahsoka Tano

The Clone Wars animated series brought back many familiar faces but it also decided to add someone new to the central cast, the Togruta padawan Ahsoka Tano. This proved to be a very good decision, as Ahsoka quickly resonated with fans. She practically became the face of the show and turned out to have a pretty complex character arc. Her popularity led to her making a comeback in Rebels, jumping to live-action in The Mandalorian, and now having her own TV series. But Ahsoka has not had very many video game appearances. She was playable in a few Clone Wars tie-in games, LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars as well as DLC in The Skywalker Saga, and Disney Infinity 3.0. She was also an unlockable character in the mobile games Force Arena and Galaxy of Heroes.

An Ahsoka Tano game would have to emphasize lightsaber combat. It could adopt a similar format to Jedi: Fallen Order with the player having to learn different weapon techniques and force powers that can be adapted to different types of enemies. But they could also add some other gameplay variations, making use of Ahsoka's more distinct abilities. Certainly, her heightened senses could be used as a mechanic for locating objectives, or her ability to read the thoughts and emotions of people around her. Ahsoka could go further with the parkour of Fallen Order and incorporate more agility-based strategies into combat.

There are a few possible timeframes this game could use, but probably the one most open to creative freedom would be the period between Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi.

8 The Bad Batch

Star Wars The Bad Batch Season 2 Release Date

The final season of The Clone Wars introduced a team of very unusual Clone Troopers- specifically ones whose genetic construction did not quite go according to plan but came out with mutations that had unexpected value. They really started to win fans over when they got their own series that saw them team up with an unaltered clone named Omega. A second season is set to be released in Fall. But the way they are depicted could also lend itself to a tactical video game. The obvious route would be to go for a tactical shooter, similar to the Tom Clancy games or even Republic Commando. However, unlike the regular clones, the Bad Batch has much more visually distinct members who all have unique strengths and weaknesses. Plus it would be hard to single out anyone as the protagonist.

The best approach would be a game where all of them are playable, with the possible exception of Crosshair depending on the story. Gameplay should involve making use of the different members' skills, which would necessitate different gameplay styles depending on who was being controlled. Playing as Wrecker would mean being able to cause lots of destruction, while Tech might be stealthier but able to tag enemies and hack defenses, and Omega can get through tight spaces into areas inaccessible to the others.

The story would be a bit more difficult to place. The best option for setting would probably be some time after the show, which could have also had some interesting opportunities - like for instance, seeing an older Omega with more fighting experience.

7 Boba Fett

boba fett

For a minor antagonist first introduced in The Star Wars Holiday Special, Boba Fett became surprisingly popular with fans. Viewers loved him so much that both expanded universe timelines had him escape his apparent death in Return of the Jedi. His story was further developed in various expanded universe novels, including his own young adult series, and he was brought back into live-action with The Book of Boba Fett which challenged some of his previous depictions.

Fett has actually appeared in several video games, but most of the time is either one of many playable characters or acts as an antagonist. His father Jango Fett was the player character in Star Wars Bounty Hunter, but Boba has not been the star of a game. This would seem like a logical business decision given his popularity. Being able to play such a beloved character alone would be enough to sell a game.

Obviously, a game about Boba Fett would have to be about bounty hunting, though that could take a few different forms. One approach might be an open-world game in a similar vein to Red Dead Redemption II, where there is an overarching story accompanied by optional sidequests and contracts. Or they could go with a more dishonored-style approach where each level gives Boba a different target and various ways to reach it. There would also be the question of where in the timeline to put such a game, and there are a few options.

Having to keep up with The Book of Boba Fett might make it difficult to do a game set after Return of the Jedi, but they could explore Boba's earlier life. One possibility is focusing on a teenage Boba in the later years of the Clone Wars, perhaps telling the story of how he really established himself as a bounty hunter. Another direction would be to go the route of Jedi Fallen Order and follow Boba Fett's adventures between the original and prequel trilogies.

6 Any Of The Clones

battlefront 2 clone wars

Although Attack of the Clones might not be the most popular Star Wars movie, the clone army it introduced managed to win over fans. This was even more so the case thanks to The Clone Wars, which made a concerted effort to develop the clone troopers as actual characters, rather than relegating them to background roles as in the films.

While clone troopers have technically been playable in several games, except for Republic Commando, they are usually generic characters without much distinction or personality. There are a lot of possible clones to choose from. If a Star Wars game were to focus on clones, the developer could either pick a major one from the series like Rex or Cody or introduce a new character. Either way, there are some interesting options.

A game centered around the clones could take a few different forms. With the popularity of Republic Commando, a logical approach might be to do a tactical shooter in a similar vein. This would mean putting the player in the position of squad leader with the ability to issue commands to teammates. But if they wanted to try something different, a game following a clone in the aftermath of Order 66 could also make an interesting story-possibly allowing for a more stealth and/or RPG-style structure.

5 Fennec Shand

Star Wars Book of Boba Fett Fennec Shand Cropped

First appearing as a guest star in the Mandalorian, where she acted as an antagonist who was apparently killed in a messy double-cross, Ming-Na Wen's assassin unexpectedly made a comeback in The Mandalorian's second season and became a central part of The Book of Boba Fett. She even found her way into The Bad Batch. Fennec Shand was first set up as a cold-blooded assassin Mando was hired to capture, but later fought by his side and played a big part in Boba Fett's attempt at a criminal empire. Even if she could be aggressive and cynical, she turned out to have her own ideas of honor and loyalty.

A game centered on Fennec would presumably be focused on her career as an assassin, so the logical direction would be a stealth game centered on precision striking. They could take an approach similar to Hitman where each level gives Fennec a new target and she has to find a way to eliminate them using whatever resources are available. Another option might be to go the Dishonored route and have penalties and rewards based on how quietly the job is done or how many bodies are left by the player. They could even experiment with non-lethal options if they're feeling generous. That said, Fennec could also work for an open-world game in the style of Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption where she gets to explore a lawless world and has options to take on contracts.

4 Jyn Erso

Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso in Rogue One

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story remains one of the best projects to come out of the Disney buyout, in large part due to its amazing lead character Jyn Erso. There is little doubt that she is one of the greatest characters to come out of the more recent films, which makes it easy to want to see more of her. So far her only other canonical appearances have been in Forces of Destiny. She has made a few game appearances, but usually as part of a larger playable roster. Jyn was added to 2015's Battlefront but sadly not included in 2017's Battlefront II. She was also included in the mobile games Force Arena and Galaxy of Heroes. Her most recent appearance was in the Rogue One DLC for LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

Jyn's been playable on several occasions but being such a great character could definitely work as the star of her own game. There is the slight problem that she died at the end of Rogue One, meaning any further stories would have to take place before that film. But that still leaves a pretty good opportunity to explore a part of Jyn's life not covered as much in the film. A big part of her character comes from her having to learn to recognize the value of fighting for something over simply surviving.

Before becoming the rebel hero fans know and love, she was a criminal trying to get by under Imperial rule. This could offer a unique perspective compared to the likes of Jedi Fallen Order. Exploring Jyn's life before Rogue One would be a great opportunity to dive into the criminal underworld of the Star Wars universe. There is no shortage of planets to choose from when it comes to cartels and mobsters for Jyn to tangle with. One way to do this would be to go for a literal open world by having the whole game take place on one planet, and a story revolving around Jyn's conflict with a single organized criminal, probably while also trying to avoid the Empire. And if they were to pick an urban planet like Coruscant, Taris, Nar Shadaa, or Daiyu, there is a fun opportunity for a Grand Theft Auto-style open world full of chaos with some fun Star Wars-themed twists.

3 Any Mandalorian

din djarin with other mandalorians

Mandalorians have been a part of Star Wars lore for a long time, depicted at various times both as good guys and bad guys. However, they have started to gain more prominence in recent years, starting with their storyline in The Clone Wars which was later picked up again in Rebels and continued through The Mandalorian. Their culture is one built around proficiency in battle, although that has been interpreted in many different ways often leading to internal conflict and division, something that could make an interesting storyline.

There are several different characters that could be chosen. A game featuring Din Djarin would undoubtedly sell like hotcakes, but other options include Bo-Katan and Sabine Wren. The game could also bring back Canderous Ordo from Knights of the Old Republic if the developers want to go further back. Yet another option would be to do a story centered around a customizable protagonist, allowing the player to make their own Mandalorian hero.

The logical direction for a Mandalorian game would be a shooter, though it could certainly be mixed with RPG or puzzle-solving aspects. It would make sense to have access to a variety of options for weapons and armor that could be modified or upgraded, allowing the player to tailor their character to a preferred gameplay style. Jetpacks would have to be included, as well as the various gadgets often found in Mandalorian armor. This could make for a much more varied experience with lots of options.

2 Darth Maul

star wars darth maul

There aren't a lot of Star Wars games about being a Sith Lord. There have been some with light/dark side options, and technically several Sith have been playable across the Battlefront and LEGO Star Wars games, but there aren't many that focus on embracing the dark side. This is probably because the Sith are the bad guys and don't have a lot of redeeming qualities. Their entire ideology is based on power at any cost. So logically, a game centered around playing a member of the Sith Order would involve the player being an unsympathetic, irredeemable, power-hungry tyrant who is encouraged to commit war crimes that make "No Russian" look like a water balloon fight. That sounds like the setup for something terrible, but there is a character in there who can manage it.

For everything fans disliked about The Phantom Menace, many were drawn to one character: its antagonist, Sith apprentice Darth Maul. The character became so popular he was eventually brought back from his apparent death in the film, returning for The Clone Wars and Rebels, but he had a strange character arc centered around the experience of being unquestionably loyal to his master only to be cast aside. He later dropped the "Darth" and abandoned the Sith, though not the dark side. This offers some room for a potentially more complex character who could have some deeper qualities.

A game centered around Maul would naturally be hack n' slash, with a heavy emphasis on lightsaber combat and dark side abilities. It could also take a page from Fallen Order and incorporate some fancy parkour, something Maul has consistently shown himself to be proficient in. Interestingly, a Darth Maul game almost happened, but unfortunately was being developed right as Disney purchased Lucasfilm and had to be shut down. This would be an interesting idea to revisit.

1 Merrin

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order Merrin

Some of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order's supporting cast proved popular. Among the fan favorites was Merrin, a nightsister who managed to survive their near annihilation during the Clone Wars. Unfortunately, the game made the frustrating decision of waiting until the end to actually give her a major part in the story, which annoyed a lot of players. While many are hoping to see her finally get her due in Survivor, fans would undoubtedly jump at a spin-off that could really dive into Merrin's character.

It would make sense for a game centered around Merrin to adopt a similar gameplay style to Fallen Order: a sort of fusion of the Soulslike and Metroidvania genres that combines parkour through non-linear recursive environments with challenging combat. However, Merrin could have a set of her own force powers and a different combat style that would set her apart from Cal Kestis. If they wanted to take advantage of her Nightsister background, this could come in the form of incorporating dark side powers. For an extra challenge, there could be a mechanic where dark side abilities have immense power but strong penalties that force the player to be selective in when to use them.
