It's fair to say that Star Wars is one of the biggest media franchises of all time. A lot of that comes from the live-action movies. But the video games also deserve some credit for enhancing the legacy of the series.

There have been many Star Wars games over the years - some of which have been very successful. They've varied in genre and content, yet many of them have introduced several fantastic characters. Some of these people went on to become fixtures of Star Wars Legends (aka the expanded universe), whereas others deserve to be featured more. Either way, here are some of the best ones.

10 Starkiller

Generally, in Star Wars, force-sensitive characters fighting on the side of good are tempted by the dark. What makes Starkiller so interesting is he's essentially the opposite.

He was raised to be a Sith apprentice by Darth Vader himself after the villain murdered his father. At the beginning of the first Force Unleashed game, he is sent on a mission to hunt down Jedis. During this adventure, though, he discovers the light side of the Force. It's this personal journey that makes the character so good. Although, it also helps that he's an exceedingly powerful badass.

9 Zaalbar

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic pairs players with so many great companions. One of them is Zaalbar, aka Big Z. As expected of a Wookie, he doesn't talk a whole lot. Yet, like Chewbacca, he's fun to have around and a loyal ally.

He also has an interesting backstory as after attacking his brother for making deals with traders - something other Wookies didn't believe - he was given the dishonorable title of Madclaw and exiled from Kashyyk. In KOTOR, he gets his chance at clearing his name.

8 Bastila Shan

Bastila Shan ranks as one of the most underrated characters from the Star Wars games. She's brash, arrogant, and overall, quite entertaining. During much of Knights of the Old Republic, she's a noble Jedi who fights by the protagonist's side.

However, after she suffers some major trauma, she ditches the good guys and joins the dark side. It's then that she becomes one of the most significant characters in KOTOR's story and Legends as a whole.

7 Merrin

Another character to surprisingly switch sides is Merrin from Jedi Fallen Order. Upon first meeting her on Dathomir, she seems like she could become a significant and dangerous villain. It turns out, though, that she's simply untrustworthy of Jedis.

Before the game, she lost many of her people and was used by a Jedi named Taron Malicos. Cal helps her out, and the two agree to work together. It's during this period where she proves herself to among the best characters in the game. Not only due to her moral standing but because she's very witty and charismatic too.

6 Darth Malgus

While Star Wars: The Old Republic isn't the most beloved game in the franchise, it does include some great characters. For example, Darth Malgus. As evidenced by his name, Malgus is a Sith Lord, although he is different from most of his allies.

He disagrees with some of the Empire's beliefs and practices, most notably their prejudices against Aliens. This doesn't mean he should be mistaken for an honorable figure, however. He's still as ruthless as they come. He simply wants to create a more efficient Sith Empire, which is the main reason he's so captivating.

5 Cal Kestis

There are several positives and negatives to Jedi Fallen Order, and its protagonist Cal fits into the former category. He is a Jedi who survived Order 66 and lives in hiding for years. During the opening of the game, though, his identity is revealed, and he's subsequently hunted across the galaxy.

The development he shows throughout the story is what makes the character so great. Initially, he's a man scared of his past and content with living in seclusion, but he later wants to fight back and restore the Jedi.

4 Revan

Throughout Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the mystery surrounding Revan continues to build as players only have little knowledge of the Sith Lord. However, it turns out they know more than it seems as it's revealed that Revan is the person they've been controlling.

This means the character's personality varies a lot as Revan's actions are dictated by the player. Even their allegiance at the time is undefined as Knights of the Old Republic is a game that lets players join the dark side or the light. However, Revan is a strong character no matter what and goes on to become incredibly important in Star Wars Legends.

3 Kyle Katarn

Jedi Outcast's Kyle Katarn

As a mainstay of the Jedi Knight series, Kyle Katarn appears in some of the most well-regarded Star Wars games ever. He starts his adventure as a mercenary and former member of the Imperial army. As time goes on, though, he learns about his Jedi heritage and becomes one himself.

Despite being unbelievably tough and powerful, Kyle Katarn feels more grounded as a character than most Jedi protagonists. This is because he is already a hero before he fully engrains himself within the Order.

2 Kreia

Because of the success of its predecessor, Knights of the Old Republic II is one of the more forgotten Star Wars games. However, one of its main characters, Kreia, deserves to be remembered. She is one of the most morally grey characters in Star Wars history as she has issues with both the Jedi and Sith.

Although, what's really fascinating about the character is her opinion of the Force. She sees it as a plight on the galaxy, and her main goal is the rid the world of it. Few characters in the franchise's history have made the player question as much about the universe as Kreia.

1 HK-47

Droids in the Star Wars universe are usually depicted as kind and loyal allies. There's no denying HK-47's loyalty, but his kindness is pretty much non-existent. He is originally an assassin who's sent around the galaxy to kill Revan's enemies.

Yet, HK-47's backstory is not what makes him a great character; that's due to his personality. The droid is constantly hilarious throughout the Knights of the Old Republic games. His signature brand of humor usually revolves around his hatred of humans (or "meatbags," as he calls them) and his love of violence.
