Star Wars changed a lot in the world of media. It wasn't just the use of special effects or the whole concept of a "summer blockbuster." Merchandising viability hadn't been a deciding factor in how to gauge the success of a movie until George Lucas created a world filled with models, games, and adorable stuffed toys.

The games category of the Star Wars franchise is wondrously varied and includes the video, card, and board variety. The following are from the board games category and aren't the type of games that use Star Wars as a theme, like Risk or Monopoly, but ones that are built in the Star Wars universe as part of the franchise.

7 Star Wars: Rebellion

Star Wars Rebellion Board Game

Players can take the side of either the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire in a game that includes more than 150 plastic miniatures, and all of the iconic vehicles and ships found throughout the galaxy far, far away. That includes TIE fighters, X-Wings, Star Destroyers, and even the Death Star.

Two to four players can enjoy a game of Star Wars: Rebellion as long as they have about two or three hours to spare. The game takes a long time partly because the scope of it takes place across the various star systems that make up this universe.

6 Star Wars: Legion

Star Wars: Legion is a board game that focuses on ground combat and makes extensive use of miniatures during gameplay. What sets this game apart from others in the same franchise is that players can control famous characters like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker as part of their forces.

The game is designed for two players and takes a considerable investment of time. Most games of Legion take at least two hours and others can easily stretch into three.

5 Star Wars: Outer Rim

Star-Wars-Outer-Rim-4

A board game that's more role-playing than real-time strategy, this game is about playing a specific type of character and building them into certain skills and professions as the turns progress. The setting for this game is the wilder and uncharted regions of the galaxy, and the players can explore a variety of adventures in their own personal ships. They can also hire their own crew, which includes some familiar and famous names, and customize their ships with unique features.

One to four players can enjoy Star Wars: Outer Rim, with the ideal number being three. It takes about two to three hours to play, which is normal for a typical RPG session.

4 Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Star Wars Imperial Assault, expensive board games

The flip side of Star Wars: Rebellion, this is the board game that lets players embrace their inner Sith. This game does have some features that differ from Rebellion, such as a campaign with a linear timeline that starts after the Battle of Yavin 4, but players can vary the exact situations and play elite strike teams or defending forces.

One to five players can battle over various parts of the galaxy in various scenarios, with no more than two hours needed for virtually every choice. For players that prefer AT-AT walkers to speeder bikes, this Star Wars board game is the ideal choice.

3 Star Wars: Armada

The name says it all. This is the Star Wars board game for those that like to play war on a massive scale, featuring all the biggest ships and weapons anywhere in the galaxy. Players build huge armadas and pit them against each other in equally epic fights for universal dominance. Frigates, turbo blasters, and the rest of either the Imperial Navy or Rebel Alliance await each player's command.

Star Wars: Armada has so many miniatures and accessories of a larger size that there's only room for two players, but on the other hand, it only takes two hours at maximum to finish.

2 Star Wars X-Wing Second Edition

Star Wars X-Wing Second Edition

Many of the board games in the Star Wars franchise put the player in charge of an army unit, and this is the one that includes the iconic X-Wing fighter. The first edition of this game is also a popular choice, but the second edition refines some of the older details to make the gameplay more efficient. Players control their own squadron of fighters in tactical combat in a variety of scenarios.

The game is for two players and takes from half an hour to 45 minutes to play, so it's ideal for entertainment at parties or game nights. It's also great for larger groups that want a smaller, faster game for tournament or team play.

1 Galaxy's Edge Dejarik

Star Wars Dejarik

This is a replica of the game that viewers saw in the first Star Wars movie, the one that Chewbacca and C-3PO were playing on the Millenium Falcon while on their way to the Alderaan system. The game is called Dejarik and it's a part of everyday life in the Star Wars universe. It's been recreated as it looked in the movie so fans can enjoy it just as much, hopefully with fewer threats of bodily harm involved. There's even an expansion available, The Masters of the Force, which includes an extra set of miniatures and updated rules for players to use.

Also known as holochess, the game doubles as an RPG, and uses dice every turn to determine the initiative of the monsters taking a turn. Like most other games that use a similar checkerboard design, it's intended for two players and takes about 30 minutes to complete.
