The original Star Wars: Battlefront from 2004 is a classic among Star Wars fans, which is why there was considerable excitement when it was announced that DICE was rebooting the series. Those disappointed by DICE's Star Wars: Battlefront games, due to the Star Wars: Battlefront 2 loot box controversy or whatever other reason, will be happy to know that it's now much easier to play the original game online.

A new update has been released for the original Star Wars: Battlefront that turns the online multiplayer servers on for the Steam version of the game. Previously, fans largely had to rely on fan-run services to play the game online after GameSpy was shut down. Besides adding online multiplayer back to Star Wars: Battlefront, the new update also adds French, German, Italian, and Spanish language support options and addresses "a number of menu and gameplay issues for different screen sizes."

This new update for Star Wars: Battlefront will no doubt be welcome to fans of the original game who are looking to take a trip down memory lane. Whether or not this results in a significant uptick in the game's online community remains to be seen, however. After all, it seems as though Steam users will likely be playing more recent games than spending time with the original Star Wars: Battlefront, which is 16 years old at this point.

Unfortunately for console players, it's unlikely that the online support will return for Star Wars: Battlefront on those platforms. Microsoft has ended Xbox Live support for original Xbox games, so even though Star Wars: Battlefront is playable on Xbox One through the backward compatibility program, fans can only access its offline modes and features.

In other Star Wars: Battlefront news, DICE has confirmed that the Battle on Scarif update will be the last major update for Star Wars: Battlefront 2. DICE will continue to support the game in terms of bug fixes and things of that nature, but it will otherwise be moving on to its next project, which is a next-generation Battlefield game due for release at some point in 2021.

Considering the initially negative reception to Star Wars: Battlefront 2, it will be interesting to see if DICE and EA ever move forward with Star Wars: Battlefront 3. If so, one has to imagine that the game will make an effort to avoid the controversies that plagued Battlefront 2, though it will likely be years before we learn anything about the game - assuming it ever even enters development, that is.

Star Wars Battlefront is out now for PC, PS2, and Xbox.
