In addition to announcing a release date for Battlefield Hardline of March 17th, publisher Electronic Arts also revealed a launch window for their other highly anticipated FPS, Star Wars: Battlefront. The game was originally slated to hit some time during the summer of 2015 but it is now targeting a holiday 2015 release.
The announcement came as part of an EA Investors call late Tuesday afternoon, where the publisher revealed sales and player numbers for many of their popular titles. Madden NFL 15, for example, is up 48% when compared to last years release, and FIFA, Madden and NHL Ultimate team revenue is up 96% percent from last year’s iterations.
But of course the big news, aside from the Battlefield Hardline release date, was the revelation that Star Wars: Battlefront is targeting a Holiday 2015 street date. Moreover, EA says that a “first look” at the game is slated for Spring 2015. We figured that the first real look at Battlefront would come at E3 2015, but apparently it’s coming earlier.
With the announcement of Battlefront‘s Holiday 2015 release date comes the news that Battlefield 5 (or the next Battlefield game after Hardline) will not release until Holiday 2016. Analysts had predicted the game, which originally was thought to be a fall 2015 release, would slip to 2016, so it’s no surprise to see EA make it official.
It’s also a smart move on their part because it leaves Battlefront free to dominate the fall 2015 season. Star Wars is going to be a massive property (as if it wasn’t already) come December 2015 when Episode 7 hit theaters. However, we would be surprised to see EA wait until December to release Battlefront.
More importantly, pushing BF5 separates the Battlefield releases enough that any sort of franchise fatigue might not be an issue. Whether or not gamers are still interested in more Battlefield after 4’s poor reception is another issue. First up, though, is the release of Battlefield: Hardline, which has the potential to reinvigorate the franchise with a new Cops vs. Robbers twist.
Where does Star Wars: Battlefront rank on your list of most anticipated 2015 releases? Will Battlefield 4‘s launch failures affect sales of the game?
Star Wars: Battlefront is slated for a Holiday 2015 release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
