Star Wars Battlefront 2 was only released in November 2017 – a mere three months ago. That game added a much-requested story campaign, but it also came with major controversy regarding its microtransactions, which many called pay to win. With EA still weathering the storm from the bungled release of that game, it may seem unusual that the publisher is already discussing its plans for future games in the franchise.

During the company's latest financial call, EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen revealed that that company is currently unsure when Star Wars Battlefront 3 might be released. Although the games have generally followed a two-year development cycle, with Star Wars Battlefront 2 being released two years after Star Wars Battlefront, it seems that EA is much more uncertain about its release plans for the next game.

"We haven’t decided exactly timing for another Battlefront yet but clearly the next big Star Wars game would be the action game in fiscal 2020," said Jorgensen. The action game that Jorgensen is referring to is Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars game. Scant details are available on that game right now, but EA has confirmed that it will be a third-person action adventure title.

In the call, EA also revealed the Star Wars Battlefront 2 sales figures and it seems that these are far lower than the publisher expected. One could infer that EA wants to take its time with Star Wars Battlefront 3, making a real effort to restore fans' interest in the shooter franchise. The company will want to figure out how to get people back onside after many fans felt disappointed and even hurt by the microtransactions and loot boxes included in Battlefront 2.

EA has confirmed that microtransactions will be returning to Star Wars Battlefront 2 in the next few months. The publisher will surely be keeping a close eye on the performance of the business model, trying to figure out how best to monetize the franchise going forward. If the game has sold poorly and players aren't interested in purchasing loot boxes with real money either, it will need to figure out how else to make bank.

There are many details about Star Wars Battlefront 3 that need to be hammered out, that's clear. However, Jorgensen's comments do confirm that EA is at least planning one more game in the franchise, which may come as a surprise given just how severe the backlash was for Battlefront 2. While no release window is planned just yet, fans will be curious to see how EA will appeal to them.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
