Nov 17th Update: An EA representative has clarified that the publisher did not mention anything about an accelerated experience or progression boosts for Star Wars Battlefront 2 when discussing bringing back the progression system.

EA has temporarily removed microtransactions from Star Wars Battlefront 2 following huge backlash, saying that it would make changes before bringing them back. Now, an EA representative has shed a little more light on exactly how the new system might work.

In a phone call with US Gamer regarding the matter, a representative for EA reportedly said that the Star Wars Battlefront 2 team is going “back to the drawing board” and will focus on balance. The team is specifically looking to balance the game regarding those who want an “accelerated experience.”

The implication is that when Star Wars Battlefront 2‘s microtransactions return, players will be able to spend money on “accelerators” which will likely affect gameplay in some way. On Twitter, US Gamer‘s Kat Bailey elaborated on the report, saying that the “main takeaway” from the conversation with EA is that microtransactions will still be tied to progression when they are eventually added back into the game.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 loot box changes

The EA representative did not outline exactly how this might work. For example, Star Wars Battlefront 2 could offer some sort of paid-for rewards multiplier, similar to Call of Duty: WW2‘s XP boosts. Or, players could be able to purchase boosts that explicitly improve their stats for a duration.

But regardless of how the accelerated boost system works, it seems that when Star Wars Battlefront 2‘s microtransactions return they will continue to give an edge to players who have more money to spend. The game has already been criticized for being pay to win and so this change will still leave many fans upset.

It also suggests that EA isn’t as cognizant of fans’ concerns as some initially thought. For many players, the issue isn’t the cost of getting ahead in the game, it’s the fact that the option is available at all. And unfortunately, it seems like that much is unlikely to change even as the Star Wars Battlefront 2 team has taken the system down in order to make some tweaks.

One small positive is that during a recent Reddit AMA about the game, the Star Wars Battlefront 2 team repeatedly stated that the adjustment process would be ongoing. It planned to continuously monitor the situation and feedback from players and make appropriate changes. So while it sounds as though microtransactions will still be tied into the progression system for now, there’s no guarantee that it will stay like that forever.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
