Without a doubt, one of the biggest pieces of news to come out of 2017 was when Electronic Arts' stock dropped in value by $3.1 billion following the loot box controversy surrounding Star Wars Battlefront 2's launch earlier this year. So, with many considering EA to be such a glaringly easy and deserving target, the folks over at Smosh Games decided to absolutely rake the company over the coals in its Honest Game Trailer for the recently released sci-fi shooter.

As seen in the video below, Smosh Games pulls no punches when it comes to criticizing Star Wars Battlefront 2, as the narrator begins by saying that EA is going for the “hat trick of shame” by following the blunders of Need For Speed: Payback and Mass Effect: Andromeda. Then, at one point, the narrator notes fairly that while Battlefront 2 introduces interesting new worlds, ships, and heroes, it's ultimately undermined by monetization, noting that EA released a product that was “less about making a fun video game, and more about extracting value for shareholders in a business strategy that would make even the Empire go, 'Whoa. That sounds a little greedy, no?'"

After some lighthearted jabs about Star Wars Battlefront 2's Inferno Squad sounding like an electric car brand, the Honest Game Trailer then calls the title's story "predictable" and likens it to a crummy piece of fan fiction that "plays like a five hour tutorial." After that, the gloves really come off when the narrator describes how the shooter's loot box business model made fans who bought Battlefront 2 so angry "that Wall Street actually notices," referring to the aforementioned tanking of EA's stock.

Perhaps the most scathing comment from Star Wars Battlefront 2's Honest Game Trailer is a followup remark from the narrator about the loot box controversy, as he states that it has created "gameplay experience that's so close to gambling, the government's investigating if it's actually gambling." This statement isn't too far from being the truth, as the whole situation regarding the game's free-to-play mechanics has even led to a US lawmaker proposing a ban on games with loot boxes.

It should come as no surprise that Smosh Games went for the jugular with its Honest Game Trailer for Star Wars Battlefront 2, but fans can decide for themselves whether or not the critiques were too harsh. Considering the mixed to average reviews in addition to EA's seeming need to gouge gamers for as much money as it can, though, many will likely agree with Smosh's criticisms levied against Battlefront 2.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
