After its predecessor was more or less a multiplayer-only experience, Star Wars Battlefront 2 is set to deliver a full-fledged single player campaign. This campaign will star Iden Versio, who will stand as one of the only female protagonists in a genre that is comprised almost entirely of male heroes. Some fans may complain that having a female main character is DICE “catering” to “social justice warriors,” but for DICE, it’s not about catering to any specific group, it’s about making a good character.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 single player story director Mark Thompson revealed as much in a recent interview with Eurogamer. Thompson didn’t seem concerned about possibly angering a certain section of Star Wars fans by including a female protagonist, and seems to stand by the studio’s decision.
“My personal belief is it’s just about it making a good character, I don’t care about anything else. If the character makes sense to the story, if the character belongs in that universe then everything else is unimportant. Does it feel right for this story? Does it feel right for Star Wars? Is that character interesting and relatable, is it someone we can connect with? Those are the important things, everything else is unimportant.”
The Star Wars series has always featured strong female characters, so it makes sense for Star Wars Battlefront 2 to feature one as well. Starting with Princess Leia in the original trilogy, female heroes have been a consistent part of the franchise’s DNA, with recent examples including Rey from the sequel trilogy and Jyn Orso from Rogue One. Of course, some fans have been vocal about their disapproval of those films featuring strong female heroes, believing that it is meant to push some sort of “agenda.”
At the end of the day, the gender of Iden Versio shouldn’t be a source of controversy, as long as she is a well-written and interesting character. And from what we’ve seen of the story so far, Versio should fit the bill, as she will give fans the opportunity to see things from the Empire’s perspective after the destruction of the second Death Star. Her leadership role in the Inferno Squad could also be intriguing, as well as any role she may have played in the early events of the sequel trilogy.
With the single player campaign in Star Wars Battlefront 2 built around her story, it’s clear that Disney, DICE, and EA all have faith in the Iden Versio character. And depending on how instrumental she was in the creation of The First Order, Versio could very well be one of the most important characters in Star Wars lore.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 will be available on November 17th for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
