A second season of Andor is basically a foregone conclusion at this point, even before the first has premiered on Disney Plus. Clearly, the folks behind the show have plans for where they want the story to go in this thrilling Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel series. But what, exactly, are some of those plans?

Well, according to the show's star, Diego Luna, at least one exciting return may be in the works. In an interview with Games Radar's Total Film, the actor had some juicy details to tease about the already confirmed second season in this series lead-up to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. When asked whether the fan-favorite dry-witted droid K-2SO (voiced by Alan Tudyk) would appear in season 2, Luna gave a sly smile and a safe reply. "Our next season ends where Rogue One starts, so I think that answers everything!"

Luna went on to discuss the differences between the version of his character, Cassian Andor, in the show compared to the one fans already know from Rogue One and other bits of Star Wars canon. "It says a lot that his best friend [in the movie] is a droid, you know?" he posed. "Or his only friend, I should say. But in the show, we're going to start with someone who is very different from the quiet, lonely man we meet in Rogue One. We're so far away from that in this first season; there's a whole journey for us to explore..." So not only can fans most likely expect to see K-2SO in season 2, but the whole show will offer a glimpse at how much he'll have changed by the time the movie's events begin.

Star Wars Andor Rogue One K-2SO Alan Tudyk casting

Andor already has a lot going for it. As a direct prequel to Rogue One, it's got a built-in fanbase ready to go. But even aside from that, its cast is nothing to sneeze at either. Luna alone would be enough to warrant a viewing, but he'll be joined by other big names bringing new and returning characters back to the screen. Forest Whitaker is all set for his much-hyped reprisal as rebel extremist Saw Gerrera, while Genevieve O'Reilly will play Senator Mon Mothma once again. Meanwhile, fans will be introduced to new characters by way of, among others, Stellan Skarsgård as Luthen Rael and Denise Gough as Imperial officer Dedra Meero.

Andor looks poised to offer new perspectives on Star Wars from its characters to even its soundtrack. It's interesting that such concepts can be explored in a series that is, at its very core, a rehash of already known elements from the franchise. But that also may be the best way to bring in new ideas. Many Star Wars fans are famously averse to change, so if it's going to happen, there might as well be a spoonful of familiar sugar to help the medicine go down.

Whether or not it will be successful at this has yet to be seen. But considering how showrunner Tony Gilroy already knows exactly how long it will be, that should also mean fewer wasted ideas and a more cohesive story. Besides, those Andor trailers have all looked pretty good, right?

Andor will premiere its first 3 episodes on September 21st, 2022, on Disney Plus.
