Cloud Imperium Games' Star Citizen has been in development for nearly a decade thanks to over $250 million in crowd-funded resources. Though there's really no telling when the game will see its full release, the developers have kept fans abreast of new additions like cities being created for its alpha build while offering non-backers the chance to see what all the hype is about with free trials.

The newest free trial, introduced as part of an in-game celebration of Star Citizen's spacefaring Navy known as "Invictus Launch Week," began today and will last until June 1. Announced last week, this coincides with two contests to show off cool flight maneuvers and create recruitment posters according to the game's Twitter account.

Star Citizen is an MMO that focuses on simulated spaceship combat and trading. The developers were embroiled in a legal battle with Crytek for about two years over the use of its CryEngine 3 that was finally settled in February.

Star Citizen has also faced its fair share of criticisms for delaying content, despite the fact that so much money has been poured into it. However, this free trial may given newcomers a taste of why the game might be worth its long wait.

Star Citizen is in development for PC.
