One of the most anticipated games that's currently flying under the radar is easily STALKER 2. The original STALKER is a cult hit, a predecessor to many of the survival FPS games that have become some of the most popular PC games in the world. STALKER 2 promises to deliver on fans' long-asked for request for more. And while it's been a while since STALKER fans last heard about the game's development, GSC Game World now has an update.

In a letter shared via the Xbox news portal, GSC Game World confirmed that the development of STALKER 2 is "progressing smoothly" on both the PC and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game. GSC explains that it has lofty goals for STALKER 2 and that it wants to deliver a "product of the highest quality possible." Part of that includes making full use of the Xbox Series X/S' hardware, which GSC says is shaping up to be the "ultimate experience."

As a follow-up on that, however, GSC also shares some disappointing news. GSC says that it does not yet have a release date in mind for STALKER 2, making clear that the game still has quite a bit of time left in development.

This news, and perhaps GSC's letter about STALKER 2 entirely, was likely prompted by a recent post made by the Xbox team. Xbox confirmed a lengthy list of games that would be released in 2021 on Xbox platforms. STALKER 2 was notably absent from that list. This letter, as well as the confirmation that STALKER 2 doesn't have a release date, likely confirms that STALKER 2 won't be arriving this year.

STALKER 2 is in development for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
