Netflix’s Squid Game has taken the internet by storm, with the South Korean drama becoming the streaming service’s most-watched show. The content is obviously being consumed by the masses, including those who do not speak or understand the native language. But, some Korean-speaking fans are now claiming that the subtitles on the series have completely changed its meaning for English-speaking viewers.

TikTok user Youngmi Mayer, who claims to be fluent in the Korean language, posted a video talking about how the English translation as part of the closed captioning on the popular Netflix series alters the meaning of the original dialogue entirely. The video has since gone viral, with social media users now calling out the streaming service for the disparity between the original script and the subtitles.

Mayer tweeted the same video and wrote, “If you don’t understand Korean, you didn’t really watch the same show. The translation was so bad. The dialogue was written so well and zero of it was preserved.” As part of the two-minute video, she does a breakdown of several scenes from Squid Game where the translation results in the original meaning of the script being lost.

One of the scenes she specifically points out includes the character Mi-Nyeo, portrayed by Stephanie Komure. In the scene, Mi-Nyeo is seen trying to convince other participants to team up with her, and the subtitles read, “I'm not a genius, but I still got it worked out.” However, Mayer explains that what the character actually says in Korean translates to, “I am very smart, I just never got a chance to study.” This is meant to put emphasis on the wealth disparity in Korean society, which was the key topic covered in the Academy Award-winning Korean film Parasite, but the translations miss out on that fact completely.

Several Twitter users have been agreeing with Mayer’s comments on the subtitles. However, many have pointed out that the discrepancy is more visible when the subtitles are set to “English CC.” These are essentially the closed-caption subtitles, which are meant for people who are hard of hearing or have a disability, and often include audio descriptions along with a literal translation of the words being spoken. These are automatically generated, and not provided by the service provider.

Since posting the video, Mayer has clarified that the English subtitles provided by Netflix are “substantially better.” However, she does point out that even those are not entirely accurate in some scenes. Squid Game is a series that explores an alternative world where people who are in severe debt decide to participate in some games to earn money. The only caveat - if they lose, they die.

Squid Game is now streaming on Netflix.
