Several months after the initial announcement, the filming window for Squid Game season 2 has been released, giving fans a sense of how long the wait will be.
One of Netflix's most popular shows, Squid Game, is a Korean-language drama that centers on a group of financially desperate individuals who have accepted a mysterious offer for a chance to win a large sum of money, specifically Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, whose gambling has left him in serious debt. The group of 456 contestants is made to compete against one another in a series of deadly children's games, with the group thinning with every competition. Squid Game season 1 was released on September 17th, 2021, so fans of the show have endured a long wait to find out what comes next.
Lee revealed that Squid Game season 2 begins filming during the summer of 2023 and guessed that filming takes around ten months to complete. In an interview with Ilgan Sports (via allkpop), a South Korean daily sports and entertainment newspaper, Lee said, "We were working on Season 1 for about 10 months as well, but that was with delays caused by COVID-19. But seeing as Squid Game season 2 will be bigger in scale, it will probably take longer to complete." Lee also discussed Lee Byung Hun, who played The Front Man, also known as Hwang In-ho, in season 1. Lee suggested that Hwang In-ho could play a larger role in the second season, as Gi-hun will be focused on revenge.
Netflix's official Squid Game season 2 announcement included images of Young-hee, the iconic Red Light, Green Light robot from season 1, and a statement from series creator, writer, and director Hwang Dong-hyuk. Hwang's statement not only confirmed Lee Jung-jae and Lee Byung Hun's return for the second season but also gave fans an idea of what was in store. While sparse, these details included a mention of "the man in the suit with ddakji," the recruiter that Gi-hun meets in episode 1 and again at the end of episode 9, and a new robot called Cheol-su, whose role remains unclear.
While the Squid Game season 2 premiere is still a long way off, the announcement of a shooting date is welcome news for anxious fans who wonder what comes next for Seong Gi-hun and what games season 2 will feature. Although very little information about the plot of season 2 has been announced, fans have been speculating about the next season's potential line-up of games since just after the first season ended. Netflix's teaser featuring Young-hee suggests she will return for season 2, which could mean a new version of Red Light, Green Light.
However, the addition of Cheol-su, who has been referred to as her boyfriend by Hwang, could point to her involvement in an entirely new game where both robots play a central role in the contestants' competition. Whatever Hwang's plans are for Squid Game season 2, it's almost certain that the second season will be just as - if not more - gruesome and tense as the first.
