When Squid Game premiered on Netflix in September 2021, it was a big hit instantly, with fans eagerly binge-watching all nine episodes and wondering who would win. The premise is intriguing and chilling, with the main characters participating in deadly games in order to win $38 million, which would be absolutely life-changing.

Season 2 of the popular series was announced in early summer 2022 and while there aren't many details out there yet, the creator has said a few exciting things about what could possibly happen in the next season.

The Plot And Cast Members

Fans have ideas about potential games in Squid Game season 2 and it's fair to say that while no one knows what the storylines will be, the general premise of people fighting each other, taking on challenges, and thinking about their lives and misfortune will be the same. The show brilliantly takes on themes of capitalism and poverty and happiness in such a fresh, new way that hasn't been seen before, one reason why it was such a massive hit.

According to TV Guide, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, the creator, director, producer and writer of Squid Game, tweeted an announcement in June 2022 sharing that there would be a second season of the popular series. This tweet gave some important information: "The Front Man" (Lee Byung-hun) and Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) (also known as Player 456) are coming back. These are two fascinating and well-drawn characters so this is great news. It's also hard to picture another season without them since they are so significant to the season 1 plot, message and theme.

There are no details on the plot yet, but fans can definitely guess that the next episodes will be just as terrifying and hard to look away from. When interviewed by Variety at the SAG Awards, Jung-jae shared his thoughts on what could happen in season 2. The actor said, “After we filmed Squid Game Season 1, we all got together brainstorming ideas for how to bring everybody back alive. My idea is the masked men carry all of them out as quickly as possible and do a surgery on them to keep them alive.”

Since Gi-hun wins the game in the season 1 finale and stays in Korea, it seems like he will still be involved in this game in season 2. Fans have ideas about nostalgia games that could be in Squid Game season 2 and it seems that maybe there will be a combination of newer and older games.

What The Creator Said

Squid Game Season 2

The Netflix Squid Game season 2 teaser doesn't give away plot points or really even hint at anything that will happen, but it's still exciting to see the "Red Light, Green Light" reference.

Dong-hyuk shared a lot in a great interview with The Hollywood Reporter, mentioning that there was a lot that wasn't explored in season 1 that could make its way into the second season.

Dong-hyuk said, "the story of the police officer and the story of his brother, the Front Man." He shared, "I’d like to explore that storyline — what is going on between those two brothers? And then I could also go into the story of that recruiter in the suit who plays the game of ddakji with Gi-hun and gives him the card in the first episode. And, of course, we could go with Gi-hun’s story as he turns back, and explore more about how he’s going to navigate through his reckoning with the people who are designing the games. So, I don’t know yet, but I’ll just say there are a lot of possibilities out there for season two storylines."

Dong-hyuk is also working on a satire TV show called The Best TV Show On The Planet. According to Deadline, it is inspired by how famous and successful he has become after Squid Game became such a huge show that everyone has been talking about.

The Release Date

While no one is sure when season 2 of Squid Game will premiere on Netflix, Dong-hyuk said in an interview with Vanity Fair that he's assuming 2023 or 2024.

Fans want Squid Game questions answered in season 2, and there's definitely a lot of excitement for it. The show has high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, having earned 95% on the Tomatometer and an 83% Audience Score. While it would be compelling enough to see the characters competing and playing these games, the fact that they could win so much money ups the ante, along with the fact that they all have difficult lives that they're dealing with.

Fans wonder how Squid Game season 2 will top the first as it's such a fresh, well-done show that feels unique. No matter when season 2 of Squid Game premieres, it will definitely be worth the wait.
