With E3 just a couple of weeks away, we’re starting to hear more concrete information about what big-name developers and publishers have in store for the industry’s biggest trade show. Yesterday, Square-Enix became the latest company to offer a tease of a big title set to be announced at the event.
A party invite circulated via email references a ‘secret title from Square-Enix’, which seems likely to be officially unveiled at the company’s E3 conference. However, there’s very little information other than that as to what title this is referring to.
The background image of the invite is a grayscale map centred on the Atlantic Ocean, which isn’t much of a clue in of itself. Aside from that, there doesn’t seem to be any sort of clues as to what is being teased — but given that it’s a secret, it’s likely related to a previously established franchise rather than their recently announced new IP.
Given the western focus of the map, it seems likely that this will be a project that Square-Enix is publishing, rather than developing in-house. While Rise of the Tomb Raider and the recently unveiled Deus Ex: Mankind Divided would fit this bill, neither of those titles would be described as a secret at this point.
The best guess based on the information available would likely be a new entry in the Hitman series, given that it’s a globe-trotting franchise published by Square-Enix, but developed by the Danish IO Interactive. With a second movie adaptation set to release this summer, the timing seems right too.
We’ve known that a new Hitman has been in development for some time, and its developers even noted this time last year that the game would not be present at E3 2014 — which hasn’t been reiterated this time around. A trademark surfaced earlier this year that hinted that multiplayer content would be a big focus in the prospective sequel.
Hitman does seem like a likely candidate for the “secret” title, but it’s far from a certainty at this point. For instance, a fully fledged sequel to Sleeping Dogs would fit both the clues and the timescale of an announcement just as well as the continuing exploits of Agent 47.
We simply won’t know for sure until E3 — as ever, the promise of exciting new announcements is one of the biggest draws the event has to offer. Stay tuned to Game Rant for all the news and updates as they happen.
