2015 has been a decent year so far for Square Enix. The release of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD was met with mostly positive reviews, and the real reason most gamers picked up that game, the included demo of Final Fantasy XV, was also well received. The company has also maintained or generated interest in some other upcoming titles, including Kingdom Hearts 3 and a new Star Ocean.
Now, it looks like Square Enix intends to keep its momentum going with a solid showing at E3 in June. But in addition to a (assumed) medium sized booth on the show floor, the company has announced that it will also hold its own E3 press conference just in time for the start of the show.
Square Enix dropped the news yesterday on its official website, revealing that the event will take Nintendo’s former E3 Day 1 morning spot. More specifically, the Square Enix E3 2015 Press Conference will take place at 9am PST on June 16th.
Those hoping to better understand what Square Enix might reveal, however, will have to keep guessing. The official statement from the publisher was intentionally vague, saying that fans will “just have to wait and see” what the company has in store.
It shouldn’t be too hard to make a few educated guesses about what is likely to be on display, though. An update on the status of Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3 seems like a definite lock, and many E3 attendees will no doubt have their fingers crossed for a playable demo or two that shows something new. Could we also finally see a release date announcement for Final Fantasy 15, a game that has been in development in one form or another for nine years and counting?
Square has done an excellent job with a couple of viral marketing campaigns for upcoming games in the Deus Ex and Star Ocean franchises, and the fact that both of those campaigns occurred just a little while ago would seem to imply that the company was seeking to generate interest ahead of E3. We’ve already seen a trailer for both Dues Ex and Star Ocean, so expect a more in-depth look at what to expect from the gameplay in each title.
And, of course, it wouldn’t be E3 if there weren’t a few surprises. Square Enix recently said that it planned on “returning to its roots” after some of its high profile efforts in 2013 didn’t do so well.
Star Ocean is obviously a part of that new strategy, but speculation about additional games is already occurring in the comments below the E3 post on Square’s site. If the company really wants to return to its roots, how about a little Dragon Quest action? Or, to take that statement further, how about finally releasing that HD remake of Final Fantasy VII? Just kidding. That will probably never happen.
What do you think Square Enix will announce at this year’s E3? What’s the one game you personally want to see? Let us know in the comments.
E3 takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Center June 16th through the 18th. Square Enix’s press conference begins at 9 a.m. PST on June 16.
