Square Enix launched Nier: Automata about 9 months ago, and ever since then the Japanese production has picked up plenty of acclaim from critics and fans alike. The game received a perfect score from Game Rant, where we praised its innovation and the fact that is was able to make itself a must-play title among more high profile games for a western audience. Given its positive reception, there's been plenty of speculation that Square Enix would soon produce a sequel for the IP, and this week Yosuke Saito has now confirmed as such.

After the Square Enix producer confirmed that a new Nier game was in the planning stages, he also confirmed that the scenario planner had already been recruited for the project. We'd previously speculated that this exact job posting indicated a sequel to Nier: Automata was in the cards, and it seems like Square Enix has wasted little time filling the position. Beyond that, Saito remained tight-lipped on more behind-the-scenes Nier production news, simply stating that he hoped fans were looking forward to the game's eventual release.

When asked if Yoko Taro, the series director who "saved Platinum Games" with Automata, was up for a new Nier game, Saito said the following:

"Yes… or so I’d like to believe [laughs]. Yoko often says that he’ll do anything as long as he gets money, but there’s no one that doesn’t move for money as much as him. He’ll only do what he really wants to do. So I’ll do my best to try to say something he doesn’t want while trying to guide him to do something I want [laughs]."

Nier: Automata recently hit the milestone of having sold over 2 million copies worldwide, which prompted Square Enix to celebrate with sales on both the Steam and PSN digital storefronts. It's unclear what Platinum Games has in store for the eventual sequel, but one thing is now more certain than ever: the cult hit property has a wider audience than it ever had before, so the successor to Automata will certainly have some big shoes to fill.
