Despite failing to meet expectations with its last three Final Fantasy iterations, most figured that Square Enix is still hard at work at their next numbered entry in the popular RPG franchise. In fact, a rumor has surfaced that suggests that the developer is set to unveil Final Fantasy XV some time next year.
According to gaming magazine GamesMaster UK, Square Enix not only has plans for a special press conference during E3 — one to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Final Fantasy franchise — but at said press conference they will be unveiling Final Fantasy XV. Based on previous rumors surrounding XV, it is expected that this title will be announced for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo’s next-gen console, the Wii U.
Of course, as is the case with any unsubstantiated rumor, this news should be taken with a grain of salt. Square Enix has made no indication that Final Fantasy XV is even ready to be shown off, let alone that it is actually in development. There are still a couple of Final Fantasy releases — namely Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy XIV (PS3) — that have yet to make their debut.
And typically, aside from publishers/developers with a ton of projects circulating at one time — like Ubisoft or Electronic Arts — it would be out of place for Square Enix to hold their own press conference during E3. Still, 25 years for a franchise is definitely call for a celebration.
It would seem more likely that Sony or Microsoft would secure a reveal as big as the next entry in the Final Fantasy series or, if the rumors are true, perhaps Nintendo could use Final Fantasy XV as a perfect accompaniment to its official Wii U unveiling. We’ll know more next summer.
Do you think that Square Enix will be unveiling Final Fantasy XV during their own E3 press conference next year? Would you prefer a Final Fantasy XV return to form reveal or a new Kingdom Hearts reveal?
