Square Enix reveals that its Avengers video game series, The Avengers Project, will feature a ‘completely original story’ and a ‘universe gamers could play in for years to come.’

Earlier this week, many game and movie fans were surprised when Square Enix announced a new Avengers game series. Officially a multi-game deal that would occur over several years, The Avengers Project was teased with an all too brief trailer that seemed to suggest that the Marvel Avengers world had somehow been scattered and put into a state of chaos, needing them to ‘reassemble.’

Although the trailer – some CGI looks with a mysterious voice over – didn’t offer many details about the new Avengers games, a press release has shed a bit more light on what fans can expect. The press release explains The Avengers Project will feature “a completely original story” and it will “introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come.” It will also sit “alongside” the comics, movies, and television series, in an effort to “bring Marvel stories to life in ways our fans have never experienced.” In other words, it’s good news for those who fear that the Square Enix Avengers games will just be lesser tie-ins.

However, that’s not to say that The Avengers Project won’t touch upon those comic/TV/movie stories a little. The press release also explains that it “will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise.”

While very little is known about the games – even with this press release offering up a few tidbits – things do sound rather positive. With Square Enix CEO Phil Rogers also saying that The Avengers Project team will craft “epic imaginative experiences” that allow gamers to “live out their Super Hero dreams,” it’s clear that Square Enix as well as Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal (who are developing the project), want to do right by fans. It also seems that these games want to offer a deeper narrative than that of LEGO Marvel’s Avengers as well as the upcoming fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, which has a supervillain busting story and at least one member of The Avengers crew.

Granted, it’s a bit premature for fans to get their hopes up completely, but few could blame them. With a previously planned Avengers game being cancelled, the Square Enix Avengers game would be the first time that current-gen fans will get a play a big budget Avengers title that features the characters in all of their seriousness, without the blocky LEGO looks or the animated sheen of Disney Infinity. There’s a lot of pressure on Square Enix and the devs to get it right, then, so fingers crossed the multi-game, multi-year project will prove a success.

No games have been announced within The Avengers Project yet.
