As major hardware and media behemoths have begun picking up game developers, rumors began circulating that a number of companies have started showing interest in acquiring Square Enix. After a day of fans and analysts speculating if this may be another Xbox acquisition, or Sony looking to sweep up a big name in the industry, the Japanese developer has addressed the rumor.

The official comment on the acquisition rumors come from Square Enix President and Representitive Director Yosuke Matsuda in a short statement about the company's position on the situation. Specifically, this official statement both acknowledges the rumor and clarifies the position that the developer will be taking under the speculation of being sold to or acquired by an outside company.

According to the official statement, the original reporting of the Square Enix acquisition was not based on any announcements made by the developer. Additionally, there have been no offers from third party companies to acquire Square Enix as a whole or any specific division or part of the developer. So, it would appear that if any companies had expressed interest in an acquisition, or if there was internal talk anywhere, none of this happened directly with Square Enix.

The statement also makes it clear that Square Enix currently has no plans to sell the company or any part of the company to any perspective buyers that might be interested. Altogether, while there is no telling if these rumors had originated from another company, Square Enix has not been involved in either the original Bloomberg reporting or the surrounding conversation among the community. For now, it looks like the Japanese developer is content as it is, with publishing arms responsible for titles like People Can Fly's Outriders, and a development arm for its own long running IPs.

While some players may have hoped to see a Square Enix titles come to Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Now as a result of these acquisition rumors, it looks like that isn't quite on the table at the moment. Considering the company's presence as both a prolific developer and publisher, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Square Enix isn't looking for any potential buyers at the moment. However, this doesn't mean that an offer to pick up the company won't come in the future that might give enough incentive for the developer to begin dedicating its products towards one major console or another.
