Alleged Spyro Remaster Box Art Surfaces

A listing for Activision’s upcoming remaster of the Spyro The Dragon trilogy appeared on Amazon this morning, providing the most concrete details yet for the project. Titled Spyro Reignited Trilogy, the much-awaited upgrade of everyone’s favorite purple dragon was listed on the retailer’s Mexican site complete with screenshots, box art, and a release date of September 21, 2018.

Though the listing is very exciting news for Spyro fans, it’s perhaps unsurprising given recent evidence and teasing from Activision pointing to an imminent reveal. About a month ago, speculation about the remaster picked up after a data mine of the 'Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy' found a demo code for Spyro the Dragon. Since then, Activision has seemingly engaged in a bizarre but carefully planned viral marketing campaign including a secretive Twitter account named "Falcon McBob" and a purple dragon egg sent to IGN associate news editor Jonathon Dornbush.

The Amazon listing sports a price tag of 737 pesos (around $40) and a box art that has, so far, not exactly gone over well with fans. It also reveals that Toys for Bob - the team currently porting the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy to Nintendo Switch - is the studio behind the remaster.

The three titles in the trilogy are Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon, and under the product details is a claim that the remastered version will feature "breathtaking graphical updates and improved gameplay controls." It should be noted that, although Activision has yet to give an official announcement on the trilogy, the Amazon listing comes from the publisher's official retailer account and thus likely heralds the end of the cryptic clues and cloak-and-dagger treatment of the game that we've seen from them so far.

It's very interesting to see Activision utilize Amazon to fuel the hype-train for an upcoming release so soon after the retailer made headlines by listing Modern Warfare 2 Remastered last month. The way in which the Spyro Reignited Trilogy'listing has been used as a methodical step in the game's promotion will reinforce the suspicion many have that the publishing giant's "accidental" amazon leaks are simply a clever marketing strategy.

Whatever the motivation behind the Spyro listing, the new details and screenshots will no doubt serve as an exciting development for fans of the franchise. With the Spyro hype steadily building and given the success of the Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy  last year, it seems as though the Spyro Reignited Trilogy could be one of the biggest releases of 2018.
