The current Spotify app has received official support for the PS5, upgrading it to a native app. Previously, the Spotify app was released on the PS4 and by extension was compatible with the PS5. The app allows gamers to play their own music via their linked Spotify account in the background while enjoying a game and could be controlled with a few presses of a button.

Despite the relative ease that the PS4 Spotify app has had in working on PS5, a native version is no surprise. Twitter account PlayStationGameSize announced the eventual arrival of a native PS5 app for Spotify some time ago. This fell in line with the previous consoles also receiving their own native versions of the Spotify app.

The native Spotify app for the PS5 is now available through a 40 MB update. According to some users on Reddit, the update didn’t make any drastic changes to the UI or much of anything else. One user reported more responsive inputs while using the app, but couldn’t give definitive proof whether that was because of the update. At the moment, the PS5 Spotify app continues the trend of PS4 software that easily upgrades to the PS5 version.

As one of the biggest music platforms that is currently available, it makes sense to have Spotify work flawlessly on modern hardware. While the app has no features that are unique to the PS5, there might be something added in the future. One Reddit user suggested that haptic feedback support for the app could allow for users to feel the rhythm in their controllers. Such a feature could be great for gamers that use their PS5 as a multimedia machine as well.

The PS5 has been lucky to have had a vast library of games and apps to pull from the PS4’s lifecycle. While there is interest in other notable titles getting some sort of PS5 update, it’s nice to have apps like Spotify be updated as well. Players can only hope that the PS5 will get more apps that have some kind of native support. With Spotify’s recent update, it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the apps that people use every day get the same treatment.
