The remake of the 2003 game is expected to have many new features. THQ released about 12 minutes of gameplay, which highlights the improved graphics and clarity of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated. The previous game was released on Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, and the original Xbox. Since then, all relevant platforms have gone through two generations, so Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated will aim to show off the advanced capabilities of current platform technology.

Based on gameplay footage, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated will put players in the shoes of SpongeBob as he explores Bikini Bottom and takes on various missions. It will have a multiplayer mode and with options for split-screen or online co-op. Sandy Cheeks and Patrick Star are expected to return as playable characters as well.

Battle for Bikini Bottom-Rehydrated will have three editions upon release: Standard edition, Shiny edition, and FUN edition. The FUN edition will cost $300, and includes a keychain, socks, lithographs, stickers, and 8" figurines of SpongeBob, Sandy, and Patrick. Both special editions do not appear to contain any in-game rewards or items, so the gameplay will remain the same for all editions.

After 17 years, fans will get to enjoy a remake of possibly the most successful SpongeBob SquarePants game ever released. The last SpongeBob SquarePants title released was in 2015, so the classic cartoon will finally have a title for the Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Deciding on a remake, THQ has put a ton of pressure on itself to produce a new game, while preserving the nostalgia of the original.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated is in development for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
