In a year with huge video game remakes like Capcom's Resident Evil 3 and Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7, another oddly high-profile title joining the cast is THQ Nordic's SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated. Set to release next month, this remake of a cult classic PlayStation 2 action-adventure platformer from 2003 has garnered a lot of buzz for applying a much needed facelift to everything — including the boss fights, as seen in a trailer released Thursday.

The story of Battle for Bikini Bottom is simple, as it follows SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy from the hit Nickelodeon show trying to stop Plankton from ruling over Bikini Bottom with an army of robots. Those robots comprise a number of the boss battles seen in THQ Nordic's trailer, as the gang must defeat android versions of themselves. However other boss fights include the Flying Dutchman, the Jellyfish King, and more.

Strangely enough one of the only bosses missing from the lineup in this trailer is a robotic version of Squidward. That was a fight cut during the original game's development, but one of the remake's selling points is that it restored content such as this boss battle in particular. Rehydrated's website lists this feature alongside the remake's new multiplayer mode.

Though fans of Battle for Bikini Bottom will have to wait until June 23 to play the remake, THQ Nordic's constant drip feed of trailers should at least keep them occupied until then. The game can also be pre-ordered now alongside expensive special "Shiny" and "F.U.N." edition box sets complete with figurine models, keyrings, and other collectible goodies.

While SpongeBob SquarePants fervor has mostly died down since the show's peak in the 90s and 2000s, the property is a big moneymaker and still has peripheral media like movies and video games in development. A mobile app called SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off released this last week after having over 15 million pre-registrations in the six months following its announcement.

The world is a much different place now in the wake of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic than it was when Battle for Bikini Bottom was announced around E3 2019. Despite that, the game's release date has held constant, so long-time fans of the yellow sponge can look forward to having a nostalgic distraction on current-gen consoles soon.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehyrdated will be released on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on June 23.
