Popular FPS Splitgate has been taking the world by storm, mainly due to how it's embraced gameplay mechanics from older, arena-style shooters as opposed to modern titles. However, there are some modern conveniences that could improve the Splitgate experience without ruining its old-school appeal. The developers at 1047 Games were recently asked about one such feature, and it seems that they're open to the idea.

Ping systems have become increasingly commonplace in shooter games, seemingly popularized by battle royales and their need to help players communicate better with each other. Ping systems have started making their way to a variety of other games as well, though there is no such thing in Splitgate. Pinging, for those who may be unfamiliar, lets players point at something and press a button to call that out to their teammates, like the location of a weapon or an enemy.

The Splitgate developers think it would be "super cool" for the game to have a ping system, as it would allow players to better point out when weapons are about to spawn back in to the arena. Splitgate's maps are full of power weapons that spawn back in on a timer, and so it's hugely advantageous for players to make sure their team controls as many of these power weapons as possible.

The developers believe that Splitgate's Ranked modes would also benefit from a ping system. As it stands, those who are solo queuing in Splitgate's Ranked modes may not want to communicate with their teammates over a mic. Those who aren't communicating over mics could still be able to relay important information to their teammates with a ping system, as has been done in numerous other shooter games in recent years.

The only issue that the developers can think of when it comes to implementing a ping system in Splitgate is how it would actually be done. Right now, Splitgate's controls are pretty full-up, with each button already dedicated to doing something important in the game. One suggestion was that the ping system could be added to the emote wheel, though it remains to be seen how exactly such a feature would be implemented if the developers ever decide to add it.

Luckily, fans don't have to wait much longer to learn some definitive information on the future of Splitgate. Splitgate will be at Gamescom 2021, and it's there when fans can learn more details about what the developers have in store to keep fans engaged with the FPS for the long term.

Splitgate is out now in beta for PC, PS4, and Xbox One with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also planned.
