Splitgate's beta launch last month was a massive success, as the game surpassed 600,000 downloads in its first week. Inspired by Halo and Portal, players enter battle arenas where they can fight using wormhole portals by firing their weapons or traveling through them. The unexpected surge of players during the beta led the developer to the decision of postponing the game's release while fixing server issues.

Recently, the developer also announced that Splitgate will be getting a next-gen upgrade for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. While the update was intended to be released already, the significant increase of players has forced the developers to address server capacity issues instead. Although there haven't been any specific details revealed about the next-gen upgrades, there are quite a few potential features that could be included to make use of the consoles' features.

Improved Frame Rates and Resolution in Splitgate

The most likely next-gen upgrades that Splitgate will receive are improved frame rates as well as higher-resolution visuals. Taking the traditional experience of first-person arena shooters, the game puts a strategic spin on the genre with the addition of portals that allow players to flank their opponents. Much like other shooters, the fast-paced gameplay of Splitgate means that players will want the highest frame rates possible. Currently, Splitgate runs smoothly at 60 FPS, but a next-gen upgrade on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S could mean frame rates approaching120 FPS. After all, games like Doom Eternal have easily passed that benchmark on next-gen consoles, and Splitgate is far less demanding.

Alongside improved frame rates, it's likely that Splitgate will see a resolution upgrade in its next-gen versions. Currently, it runs at 720p on all versions, which means that a resolution bump would be welcome. There have been some complaints from some players about the overall blurriness of portals in Splitgate, but that seems to be more of a gameplay decision to limit how confusing it can be to have 16 cameras on the map. Nonetheless, getting as high as 4K resolution for a game like Splitgate would be a fantastic upgrade for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Possible Next-Gen Features in Splitgate

Alongside better frame rates and improved resolution, it's possible to see Splitgate try out some of the next-gen features found on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. As a first-person shooter, features specific to the PS5 DualSense controller like haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support could be implemented nicely. Not everyone may enjoy using the DualSense's adaptive triggers, but having the option there would certainly be a nice bonus. There are also some features like motion-aiming support with the PS5 DualSense gyroscope that could be implemented in Splitgate.

On the other hand, the Xbox Series X also has a number of unique features like its exceptional HDR capabilities and processing power. Splitgate could make good use of its hardware if the developer designs next-gen upgrades with the Xbox Series X's advantages in mind. With the likely possibility of a frame rate and resolution update for Splitgate, the Xbox Series X would be perfect for playing the game at 120 FPS in 4K resolution. Ultimately, the features that will appear in the upgraded versions of Splitgate remain to be seen, but there's a lot of potential with the hardware inherent to the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Splitgate is out now in beta for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions in development.
