Splitgate, the arena first-person shooter game that's been described as Halo meets Portal, has taken the world by storm. The game's open beta has seen it explode in popularity, rising through the charts and becoming one of the year's surprise successes in the process. And if all goes to plan, it seems as though Splitgate will be expanding its audience even further by making its way to platforms other than the ones it's currently available on.
According to 1047 Games CEO Ian Proulx, there are plans to bring Splitgate to mobile devices as well as the Nintendo Switch. Proulx clarified that the studio has not actually started work on these ports, but that the goal is for Splitgate to "be available on everything." At the time of this writing, Splitgate is available to play on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, though a proper next-gen version has yet to be released.
While it's unclear when Splitgate mobile and Switch ports may materialize, fans shouldn't have to wait too much longer to try the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game. A Splitgate next-gen update is in the works for PS5 and Xbox Series X, and while details remain scarce, more information should come to light sooner rather than later.
Between the Splitgate next-gen ports and the plans to bring it to mobile and Switch, it's clear that 1047 Games has big ambitions for its arena shooter. And as long as Splitgate's popularity persists, there's no reason to think that the development team won't achieve its goals. Right now the game is technically still in beta yet is as popular as ever, and there should be a big push for it once it has its proper launch as well.
The Splitgate release date was delayed from its original date of July 27, but it's expected that it will still launch at some point this month. The developers had to push Splitgate's release date back due to its surprising popularity, as the servers were quickly overwhelmed and forced the team to upgrade.
Splitgate's server problems are mostly under control at this point, largely thanks to a queue system, but one has to imagine that the queue will be done away with once the proper launch rolls around. Hopefully 1047 Games can offer Splitgate fans a more specific release date soon, as the game currently has a ton of momentum that it would be great to see it capitalize on.
Splitgate is in beta on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in the works.
