Ubisoft may not be working on a new Splinter Cell game, say sources on the matter. The news will be incredibly disappointing to fans who had expected the reveal of a new Splinter Cell game to be one of the marquee announcements of the company's E3 2019 press conference.

In a new edition of the Splitscreen podcast, the famously well-informed journalist Jason Schreier revealed that everyone he has spoken to says that Ubisoft isn't developing a new Splinter Cell. "I’ve asked a bunch of people about this because everybody wants to know if a Splinter Cell game is coming," said the journalist, but "Everyone I’ve talked to has said no, as far as they know there is no Splinter Cell game in production."

Schreier's reveal will be hugely disappointing to fans, as a new Splinter Cell game hasn't been released in nearly six years. The last game in the franchise to be released was Splinter Cell Blacklist, which launched in August 2013 on PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii U. There hasn't been a new, core Splinter Cell game released for PS4 and Xbox One and with the PS5 and next Xbox expected to launch in 2020, it seems like there never will be.

Fans will also be incredibly surprised by the reveal, as Ubisoft had seemed to be teasing the game. A Ghost Recon Wildlands Splinter Cell event that starred Splinter Cell protagonist Sam Fisher had many fans wondering if an announcement was imminent. It seemed strange to many that Ubisoft would add the character to the game with no new Splinter Cell game in the pipeline.

There was also a teaser from one of Sam Fisher's voice actors, with Italian actor Luca Ward adding Splinter Cell imagery to his Facebook page back in January. E3 may have been several months away at that point, but some fans saw it as what could be the first teaser on the way to the announcement of a new Splinter Cell game.

However, while it does seem as though Ubisoft isn't working on a new Splinter Cell game now, the company does know that fans would like to play as Sam Fisher again. Nine months ago, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told fans that "one day" they will see something new from Splinter Cell. It's unclear when that reveal will be made but if Schreier's sources are correct, it won't be made at E3 2019.
