Update 8/1: This article was updated to fix errors.

It's been years since fans have seen a new Splinter Cell game, and we're still waiting for Sam Fisher to make his long-awaited debut on current-generation consoles. While a new Splinter Cell isn't currently available on current-gen hardware, Xbox One owners can at least revisit Fisher's older adventures, as two more Splinter Cell games have been added to the backward compatibility lineup.

As of yesterday, the Xbox 360 versions of Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Splinter Cell: Double Agent are both playable on Xbox One. Both games earned strong reviews back when they originally released, and considering how much the Splinter Cell brand has been associated with Xbox in the past, it's fitting that they've been added to the backward compatibility lineup.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if the Splinter Cell trilogy of games from the original Xbox will ever make their way to the backward compatibility lineup. Those games were known for being far superior on Xbox compared to their PS2 and GameCube counterparts, and in fact, the original Splinter Cell was even a timed-exclusive for Microsoft's debut console.

While having access to older Splinter Cell games on modern consoles is a plus for fans, some may be more concerned with the future of the franchise. A Walmart leak more or less confirmed that a new Splinter Cell game is in development, and all signs pointed to it being shown off at Ubisoft's E3 2018 press conference. However, E3 came and went with no sign of the new Splinter Cell, making the game even harder to find than its main character.

However, Ubisoft has stated multiple times that it is interested in continuing the Splinter Cell franchise, and CEO Yves Guillemot has said that it will return one day. Assuming the Walmart leak is accurate, it seems likely that the new Splinter Cell game will be announced within the next year or so, whether that be at Gamescom later this month, The Game Awards in December, or at next year's E3 event. Of course, that's just speculation at this time, and it's possible the next Splinter Cell is farther off than we think.

In the meantime, Splinter Cell fans can now check out Blacklist and Double Agent on Xbox One.
