March 10 has been designated Mar10 Day, a yearly celebration for fans of the Super Mario franchise, but Nintendo could do something similar with Splatoon using another convenient date shorthand. With Splatoon 3 being one of the Nintendo Switch's latest major titles, receiving regular updates and maintaining a high player base, it deserves a fair amount of respect from the developer. Although the world of Splatoon has not been as expanded as the Mario universe due to its more recent appearance, it has contributed some well-loved characters and gameplay to become one of Nintendo's prominent names in a short time.

In Splatoon, each game's idol groups - such as Splatoon 3 newcomers Deep Cut - are easily the most popular and iconic characters in the series. The fact that the idols play a significant role in each game and actually have lines, compared to the silent player character, plays a role in that. In addition, the resident idols host a broadcast that explains the game's updates, as well as details the Splatfests where they perform concerts. Among this group, the Squid Sisters Callie and Marie are the most iconic, which would make them the perfect hosts for a major Splatoon celebration on March 13.

Splatoon's Success Warrants a 'Holiday' Similar to Mar10 Day

Much like Mario could be interpreted as Mar10, fans of the series have noted that Splatoon's idol and podcast host Marie could likewise be turned into Mar13, highlighting one of Splatoon's main characters. She has played a prominent role in the story of all three games' single-player storylines, so if there was any character who could be considered the true face of Splatoon, Marie would be the most likely candidate - although her cousin Callie would also be along for the ride thanks to their comedic duo act.

Mar10 Day often coincides with sales and the announcement of new Mario-themed merchandise and events. For example, Mar10 Day 2023 at Nintendo New York saw a host of celebrations, complete with photo opportunities and game deals. Mar13 Day would have similar potential, especially since customizing the player's Inkling or Octoling is a big part of the series. Releasing real-world counterparts of some of the games' most popular cosmetics would be a good move, particularly considering some of its outfits are unique and stylish to the world's marine life inhabitants. It could also be a good time for a one-day sale on Splatoon 3 in order to grow the player base further.

The best argument in favor of Mar13 Day is that Splatoon is already no stranger to hosting regular events. Splatoon 3's new Tricolor Turf War Splatfests are an evolution of an event that has been held since the Wii U original, complete with performances from each game's respective idol group. Mar13 Day could be the venue for a major Splatfest, one with bigger rewards to celebrate the occasion. The in-game announcement could even be hosted by Callie and Marie, which seems all the more likely now that players can revisit Inkopolis through Splatoon 3's first DLC expansion. Bringing the Squid Sisters back to host a big event would certainly be a nice bit of nostalgia for longtime Splatoon players.

Splatoon may not have as long a legacy as the Mario series, but it has grown big enough - as Splatoon 3's Season 3 updates show - to run a celebration of its own. Whether the event would be heralding real-world Splatoon merchandise or just in-game spectacle, Mar13 Day could become an enjoyable tradition for fans. Between its presentation and theatrical Splatfests, Splatoon already feels like the perfect inspiration for big parties, so Mar13 Day could do for Splatoon what Mar10 Day does for Super Mario.

Splatoon 3 is available now for the Nintendo Switch.
