Splatoon 2 players had a surprisingly big role in determining the future of Splatoon 3, as the Final Fest: Splatocalypse Splatfest winning side chose how the series would proceed. Pearl and Marina, Splatoon 2's idols and newscasters, lead the fight between Chaos and Order, respectively.

Although more Splatfests were eventually released or re-released in the game, the Final Fest was initially intended to be the last Splatfest of the title, and it was a big deal as a result. Inklings and Octolings battled it out to determine which side would be the victor in Splatfest turf battles, dueling each other to see who could complete the round with the most turf inked in their team's respective color.

In the end, Chaos came out as the winner, and Splatoon 3 owes a big part of its design and direction to it. In a new interview with the developers of Splatoon 3, they revealed that fans were correct in their belief that the Splatfest would somehow influence the next game. The developers had no way of knowing which team would win, but were already thinking about how they could integrate either Order or Chaos into the theme of the next game.

Splatoon 3 is set in the "city of chaos" Splatsville, which the developers stated "is a city that rapidly developed with the arrival of the “Chaos” craze after the Splatfest." It and the surrounding Splatlands are considerably further away from the areas of the first two games, but that hasn't stopped Inklings and Octolings from flooding into the city. In addition to the overall architecture and look of the area, the "Anarchy Splatcast" held by the new idols, Deep Cut, and their Splatfest song "Anarchy Rainbow" are likely also references to the Chaos theme. Unfortunately, the developers didn't express much regarding how the game may have turned out if Order had won instead.

As long-time fans of the series might recall, the final Splatfest of Splatoon 1 also had an influence on its sequel. With Marie narrowly winning over Callie, the story mode's direction was shifted to reflect this, with the majority of the story mode being led by Marie in an effort to rescue Callie from DJ Octavio. The developers confirmed that this continued going into Splatoon 3, stating that "the trends and values of the Inkling world change significantly depending on the outcome of the final Splatfest."

With at least two years of support coming to Splatoon 3, it will be some time before players need to consider which side to choose in its inevitable final Splatfest. However, when the time comes, players should choose carefully, as it's likely that the development team will continue this trend should a Splatoon 4 be in the cards.
