Nintendo has a healthy lineup of games slated to release over the coming months, with the likes of Kirby, Bayonetta, and Breath of the Wild 2 defining the next year of the Switch. Of course, there's also Splatoon 3, the newest entry in Nintendo's ink-shooting franchise. During today's Nintendo Direct presentation, Splatoon 3 gave fans a good look at its Salmon Run co-op game mode in one of the meatiest trailers yet.

Longtime fans of Splatoon are likely familiar with Salmon Run already, as it appeared periodically in Splatoon 2. This new trailer is confirmation that Salmon Run will return in Splatoon 3, utilizing the new features that Splatoon 3 is bringing to the table to flesh out the experience. The trailer reveals some of the enemies players will square off against, as well as some other goodies.

In Salmon Run, players face waves of mutant fish. Players have to balance taking down the fish directly while also keeping the stage's floor covered in their ink, maintaining their full range of motion. This time around, however, players will also be taking on a "giant Salmonid" that looks to be inspired by Godzilla. The trailer doesn't dive that deeply into how the giant Salmonid will affect gameplay, though it seems like it will be a centerpiece of the experience.

Since its reveal, Splatoon 3 has had many fans of the franchise clamoring for new information about the shooter. For many, it's an under-appreciated gem in Nintendo's lineup, with Splatoon 2 being one of the Switch's biggest games during its early years. Splatoon 3's announcement came out of left-field last year, but it's slated to release sometime this summer, meaning fans just have a few more months to wait for it.

Splatoon 3, in general, does look like a decent expansion of the series, at least from what fans have seen so far. The aesthetic is perhaps more post-apocalyptic than some were expecting, but it's still a big announcement for many Nintendo fans. Of course, it's just one of the many games that Nintendo has in the pipeline, as the next year or so will be full of major games for the Switch.

The Switch itself is seeing a massive amount of success, regularly topping console sales charts over the PS5 and Xbox Series X. With a strong software lineup on the horizon, and even recent games setting a better standard for success, Nintendo fans have a lot to look forward to.

Splatoon 3 is in-development for Switch.
