Earlier today, Nintendo fans received a new glimpse at a number of projects in development from Nintendo. Coming by way of the first Nintendo Direct since E3 back in June, new games were announced such as Kirby and the Forgotten Land. In addition, the presentation showed off previously revealed titles. One popular project seen in the Direct was Splatoon 3. Fans of the inklings were treated to a bunch of new details about the third installment in the series.

Announced back in a February Nintendo Direct, Splatoon 3 is the upcoming game in the hugely popular series. One of Nintendo’s newer IPs, the franchise started on the Wii U with the original Splatoon in 2015. Since then, it has received a sequel, Splatoon 2, as well as had the inkling character from the series appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Nintendo looks to keep the good times rolling and the ink splatting with Splatoon 3.

While fans already knew some details about Splatoon 3, a new trailer and update from the Squid Research Lab recently gave gamers a much better look at the upcoming title. For starters, new details about the upcoming story mode, “Return of the Mammalians,” were given. While certain aspects regarding the plot remain unknown, it seems the story revolves around Agent 3 as she investigates the disappearance of mammals from the planet. In the gameplay footage, several familiar enemies types from the Octarian Army were shown, however, they appeared to be covered with fur this time around. In addition, some familiar faces look to be aiding Agent 3 as glimpses of Callie and Marie were seen as well.

In addition to this fresh look at the story mode, new features for the multiplayer in Splatoon 3 were unveiled. While the core concept of Turf War appeared mostly unchanged, the developers revealed a host of new weapons for players to check out such as the Trizooka. The video even showed off an inkling piloting a Crab Tank that can curl into a ball and roll around the arena. Beyond this, another special weapon that transformed inklings into a kind of ink-ninja called Zipcasters was seen. While in this form, inklings could use stretchy tentacles to grapple to faraway places.

Even though an exact release date was not given for the game, the February reveal trailer revealed that Splatoon 3 was launching in 2022. It will be interesting to see what other information fans find out in the coming days about this newest installment in the fun and always colorful world of Splatoon.

Splatoon 3 is scheduled to release in 2022 for the Nintendo Switch.
