It was a long time coming, but fans finally received the first full-fledged Nintendo Direct presentation in almost an entire year-and-a-half yesterday, packed with new information on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, The Legend of Zelda, and a plethora of other titles coming in the first half of 2021. However, it wouldn't be a Nintendo Direct without the Japanese video game company telling fans "one more thing" at the end, and yesterday's final surprise turned out to be the reveal of Splatoon 3.

Even though the presentation yesterday focused on available games as well as games releasing in the next few months, Nintendo announced that Splatoon 3 will release sometime in 2022. While it may be hard to imagine, it has been over three years since the release of Splatoon 2 in July of 2017, and though the third-person shooter's first sequel came only about 2 years after the original, it seems that Nintendo will be taking a bit more time with the series' newest installment. Now, some new details about Splatoon 3 have been revealed.

Yesterday's trailer for the upcoming game didn't reveal many specifics, but certainly showed fans a whole lot, and just a day after the game's official announcement, Nintendo's official Twitter account has already shed some light on a few mysteries. In a thread of tweets made today, Nintendo revealed information about some of Splatoon 3's new styles, location, weapons, and mechanics.

Since the release of the original Splatoon game, Nintendo has established a fictional "Squid Research Lab" dedicated to studying Inkling life, and the new thread of tweets have been made in the same vein. The tweets explain that Inklings can now braid their tentacles like hair, be joined by a Smallfry Salmonid companion, and even perform new "squid roll" and "squid surge" moves allowing for more mobility during turf wars. Perhaps the biggest reveal came in the confirmation of Splatsville, the "city of chaos." Just as many fans had expected, the results of Splatoon 2's monumental Chaos vs. Order Splatfest had a lasting impact on the world of Splatoon, as the city's development is said to have rapidly accelerated since Chaos prevailed after the event.

The tweets confirm that Splatsville is located in a larger, post-apocalyptic-styled desert area known as the Splatlands. Nintendo reveals that the desert climate has attracted an abundance of Inklings, where Splatoon's trademark Turf Wars are lively as ever, accompanied by "midair spawner drones," new modified special weapons, and "evolved" looks for some classic Splatoon weapons, like the .96 Gal and Range Blaster. The tweets also detail the new bow weapon shown off in yesterday's trailer, noting that it can launch simultaneously launch three streams of ink.

Although Splatoon 3 is quite a ways off, Nintendo has reassured fans that they will learn more about the upcoming game over time. Now, as fans patiently await the announcement of a new Global Testfire beta for the game, it will be interesting to see how Splatoon 3 shakes up the series' formula when it releases next year.

Splatoon 3 is set to release in 2022 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
