It's been a solid week so far for Nintendo, as the company just came off announcing another incredibly successful month thanks to the renewed popularity of its latest console, the Switch. With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and now Mario Kart 8 Deluxe offering fantastic experiences on the Switch, attention has turned to what's next. Through a new Nintendo Direct focused on the upcoming fighting game ARMS, Nintendo also revealed a new and exciting single player trailer for Splatoon 2.

The latest trailer for Splatoon 2 opens in a familiar looking space, most likely Inkopolis Plaza from the first game, with the main character chasing down one half of the Squid Sisters pop duo, Marie. At this point, the player arrives in a new space called Octo Valley, the new single player zone where Marie enlists players help in defeating the Octarians once more. It's presumed that her sister Callie, a prominent member from the first game's campaign, has gone missing this time around.

From there players get a quick glimpse at some gameplay and for those who played the first game on the Wii U, the structure appears the same. Each level features various platforms and mechanics players will need to master before ultimately facing a boss battle at the end of the world. New weapons are also shown off including ink splatting chain guns and dual pistols along with new mechanics like ink coils to quickly splat a large space, grinding on an ink rail system to move around the open space, and boost pads to out run some dangerous objects shooting out of a wall.

This revamped single player experience joins with the popular multiplayer modes like Turf War and the newly announced Salmon Run mode. Similar to modes like Horde in the Gears of War franchise, Salmon Run pits up to four players against increasingly difficult waves of enemies. Golden eggs can be retrieved off boss style characters, which count towards a completion goal for the team.

Splatoon 2 launches arrives July 21, 2017 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
