Splatoon 2 has been sunset by Nintendo, which is to say that no more content updates were planned for the online multiplayer shooter. The Octo Expansion came out mid-2018, followed by another year of Splatfests lasting to July 2019. Yet in a surprise turnaround, it looks like Splatoon 2 is set to get yet another Splatfest.

Starting May 22 and lasting through May 24, Splatfest is returning to Splatoon 2. It's not a brand new Splatfest, however. It'll be a rerun of of Splatoon 2's very first Splatfest, Mayo vs. Ketchup. Splatoon 2 fans hoping to have just one more event likely won't mind that it's a repeat, of course.

It's not entirely clear why Nintendo is bringing back a Splatoon 2 Splatfest, especially at the end of May. Nintendo did announce another special Splatoon 2 event today, though. Between 4/29 and 5/6, a Special Demo version of the game will be available for free. Splatoon 2 will also be on sale fur the duration of the free demo.

Splatoon fans are guaranteed to start speculating with the announcement of a new Splatoon 2 Splatfest. It's been around a year since Splatfests ended for Splatoon 2 and fans are hopeful that Nintendo has more plans for Splatoon in the future. Could the late-May Splatfest imply an E3-ish June Splatoon 3 announcement? Only time will tell.

Splatoon 2 is available now on Nintendo Switch.
