It may have flew under the radar for some, but indie hit Spiritfarer was one of the most highly-rated new video game releases of 2020. The emotionally-charged game is regularly available on just about every modern platform, including Xbox Game Pass, and so those who have yet to check it out may want to give it a go. If they jump in now, they'll even be able to experience the game's first major post-launch content update, which is rolling out to all platforms now.

Developer Thunder Lotus has announced that Spiritfarer has passed 500,000 copies sold worldwide, and to celebrate, the game's Lily Update is now available to download. The Lily Update is just the first piece of the puzzle when it comes to Spiritfarer's 2021 content, as fans have two additional free content updates to look forward to later in the year as well. The Beverly Update is coming at some point this summer, to be followed by the Jackie & Daria Update in the Fall.

While fans wait for the Beverly and Jackie & Daria Updates, they can check out the Lily Update. The Lily Update adds a new Spirit to the game in the form of Lily the Butterfly. One of the main reasons behind Lily's introduction to Spiritfarer is to expand on main character Stella's story, offering players a clearer idea of her overall goal in the game. It also makes some improvements to local co-op play and addresses some of Spiritfarer's lingering bugs.

As far as the local co-op improvements go, Spiritfarer co-op players will notice two big changes. The first is a reworked UI when playing in co-op, and the second is the ability for two players to fish simultaneously. Previously, Spiritfarer players had to take turns doing the fishing mini-game. This should ensure faster-paced gameplay as well as help players complete their collection of fish in a timelier manner.

In future Spiritfarer updates, fans can expect more quality of life changes, more new Spirits, and other new features. For example, the Beverly Update coming in Summer 2021 will include new boat buildings, collectibles to find, and recipes to craft. The Jackie & Daria Update coming in Fall 2021 sounds like it might be the most substantial Spiritfarer DLC, as it will be adding two new spirits, a new island, even more new boat buildings, new resources to collect, and a new event for fans to participate in.

Those who have yet to play the award-winning Spiritfarer may want to give it a look now, and lapsed players may want to consider popping back in to check out the Lily Update.

Spiritfarer is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
