The following article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

After months of theorizing and anticipating, fans finally got to watch Spider-Man: No Way Home on the big screen at the end of last year. It worked as the perfect ending to Tom Holland's trilogy, and included some interesting twists, a whole lot of action, and the death of Marisa Tomei's Aunt May. Since the film’s release, Holland had not commented on that devastating loss to his character, but he has finally broken his silence.

Fans who have seen Spider-Man: No Way Home will know that Tomei's Aunt May is killed by Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin. It was a heartbreaking moment for Holland’s Spider-Man and fans of the trilogy who have appreciated the relationship between the two for all these years.

May has been the role model in Peter Parker's life, and her loss came as a shocking surprise. In an interview with Marvel.com, Holland spoke of the death and how the relationship between May and Peter Parker has been “integral to the heart and soul of the story” throughout the trilogy. Spider-Man fans have come to accept Uncle Ben's demise, both in the comics and the films, but May's death was quite unexpected. “This scene kind of seemingly comes out of the blue, like no one expects this to happen,” Holland said in the interview, and admits that the scene was quite "hard hitting."

He isn’t wrong, because seeing Holland's Parker lose the one family member is quite saddening, and both actors did a phenomenal job at bringing the scene together. Apart from her death, May’s final words, “with great power, there must also come great responsibility,” are nerve wrecking, as those were the exact words that Ben said in the Marvel comics and 2002’s Spider-Man. Until that moment in No Way Home, the MCU Spider-Man films had avoided using the crucial line in Peter Parker's story.

In Holland’s trilogy, a lot of importance is placed on the male figures in his life, including Tony Stark, whose death leaves Parker feeling quite lost for a while. However, it is important to note that May is the person who has raised him. With May's death and the wisdom she passes on to Parker in her final moments, Holland recognizes her as the true role model in Spider-Man's life. “Shoutout to May,” he exclaims.
