Spider-Man: No Way Home was a loaded film and provided so much content for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to ponder over. However, it wasn’t an easy task to bring the film to life while adding several returning characters into the fold. Writers Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna have revealed that while writing the script for the blockbuster film, one key scene had to be rewritten at least 10 times before it was finalized.
After months of speculation, Spider-Man: No Way Home fans were pleased to see Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield return to reprise their version of the web-slinging hero alongside the MCU's Spider-Man, Tom Holland. But, the first time the three came face-to-face in the film had to be a profound moment, and Sommers and McKenna worked very hard to ensure that the scene was meaningful.
The first time that Holland's Peter Parker meets Maguire and Garfield's versions of the character is just after Marisa Tomei's Aunt May has died. While he is obviously grieving and fighting his own emotions, it was important to ensure that the older Spider-Men brought wisdom to the scene. At the same time, there were a lot of factors involved when it came to narrating the story of the two heroes and where they had been since their films were released. Sommers told IGN, during a recent IGN Fan Fest panel, that “a lot of conversations and a lot of writing” had been done for that particular scene. “I would say we must have written that scene at least 10 times.”
While writing the scene, Sommers and McKenna received a lot of input from all the major players involved, including Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, producer Amy Pascal, director Jon Watts, and both actors Maguire and Garfield. “Once we knew we had Tobey and Andrew… we definitely talked a lot about how will they be coming in,” Sommers told IGN. With so many opinions, it was crucial to get just the right amount of detail into the scene to ensure that the Spider-Men fit into the plot and also did not overshadow the MCU's Parker.
The scene involves Maguire and Garfield's version of Spider-Man trying to convince MCU Parker to not send the villains back to their reality. The scene that fans finally saw on the big screen was courtesy of an evolution of ideas. Every time the writers would put together a script and play out the scene with the actors, they weren’t satisfied and went back to the writing block. After several drafts and input from the group, they finally settled on the scene that fans watched. The writers revealed that they were “just trying to make sure [the scene] was living up to this great concept” of the Multiverse and bringing three different Spider-Men into the same universe.
