There was a lot of Marvel shown off at the PlayStation Showcase 2021. While fans got to witness Square Enix's upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy game and the surprise announcement of Marvel's Wolverine, little was quite as excited as when Insomniac Games revealed Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Although it's technically the third game in the series, the newest Spider-Man game seems to be the next full-length title for the two webheads. Along with the announcement for the game itself, the teaser showed off who Peter and Miles will be facing off against next: Venom.

Adding Venom to Spider-Man 2 seems like the logical next step for the series, as very few classic Spider-Man villains would be up to the task of taking on Peter Parker and Miles Morales at the same time. Venom, however, might be one of Spider-Man's most challenging foes, so it makes sense to have the symbiote be the next major obstacle for the two heroes. That said, Venom's appearance might mean that more bad things are to come for Miles Morales and his family if Venom's role will be similar to that in his comic appearances.

When Miles Morales was first introduced in the comics, he had some big shoes to fill, as Peter Parker had just been killed in the Ultimate Universe and Miles was discovering spider-powers of his own. He stepped up to try any take Peter Parker's place as Spider-Man and saw some success. He dealt with a handful of villains and even stood up to his uncle who turned out to be the Prowler. However, things took a sharp turn for the worse when Venom attacked the Morales household falsely believing that Miles' father was the new Spider-Man. After rushing to the hospital to help treat his father, Venom reappeared to attack Spider-Man once more.

Miles was able to fight off Venom, but in the crossfire between Venom and the police, Miles' mother Rio was shot and killed. This caused Miles to hang up the suit for over a year, as he blamed himself for his mother's death. Although his father lived, the two blamed Spider-Man for what happened, causing a rift between Miles and Jefferson that isn't addressed until much later.

What Might Happen in Spider-Man 2

Obviously, the events that take place in the comics can't happen in the Spider-Man universe that's been set up by Insomniac, as Jefferson Davis was killed in the first game in the series. However, Insomniac's Spider-Man games definitely take a lot of inspiration from the comics, so there's a possibility that Venom could cause Rio Morales' death in Spider-Man 2. Based on how protective Miles is of his mother in Spider-Man: Miles Morales, it seems like the studio could have been setting up something disastrous for the family once more in the upcoming sequel.

The idea of "Spider-Man no more" is a common motif that happens throughout a lot of Spider-Man media, and it could make an appearance in Spider-Man 2 if Venom kills Rio, with Miles hanging up the suit for a while just like he does in the books. This could add some drama and tension and allow for the classic story arc to happen in the game. Hopefully, Miles wouldn't quit the hero life for too long, as he was extremely well received in his stand-alone title. There's no telling what will happen, but it seems like there's a great storyline that Insomniac could draw from with Miles and his relationship to the symbiote if the studio were to go in that direction.
