Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has been announced, featuring both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Sadly though, despite having two Spider-Men, Spider-Man 2 will still be a single-player experience.

It has been a crazy year for Insomniac, Spider-Man's developer. Last year the team released Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a spinoff sequel to the original 2018 game, Marvel's Spider-Man. Then earlier this year, Insomniac would go on to release Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart; leading many to wonder just when a formal Spider-Man sequel would be announced. Luckily, Insomniac announced Spider-Man 2 at the PlayStation Showcase 2021, with a brand new trailer showing off both Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

In a PlayStation Blog post following the formal announcement, Insomniac confirmed that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a single-player game. This will come as a disappointment to many, as co-op in Spider-Man has been a desired feature ever since the original's release. Insomniac Games Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations Ryan Schneider writes, "We’re so thrilled to continue the journey of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales in their most epic single-player adventure yet, coming exclusively to PlayStation 5 consoles in 2023." It looks like fans will have to wait a while longer for some co-op web-slinging action.

What's more, it is unclear presently just how the game will split gameplay between Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Throughout the blog post, Schneider typically refers to them together, making one believe that they are being considered equals here in this game. For instance, he writes, "We're equally pumped to craft all-new stories for Peter and Miles in this sequel," indicating that both characters are indeed being focused on. Perhaps Insomniac will split the game up as it did in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart with Ratchet and Rivet.

If not Rift Apart style, there are some other designs that could work for balancing Peter and Miles. In the dream scenario, players can freely change characters as they see fit, as if they were playing the story mode of Grand Theft Auto 5, with Peter and Miles having their own upgrade trees and skill sets. Worst case scenario, the game is truly just about Peter's Spider-Man, with Miles having limited playability or not even at all. Please, Insomniac, do not make it the latter scenario.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 releases exclusively on the PS5 in 2023.
